Have any of you ever used the "upside-down" tomato planter?

I have 2 and was about to buy the plants to try it.

Anyone tried it? How'd it do?

Yea, I wanna know too!! And I also want to know if someone has made their own, rather than spending $40 or $50 on the one advertised.

A friend of ours used the upsidedown tomato planter last summer -- and he's an avid gardener -- and he hated it. The soil didn't drain well, there was a big mold & root rot problem.

I did have a link to a site that told how to make one.

I considering doing the same thing (make my own) and researched it last year- can't find those links now but came up with all types of information online

My Mom was an avid, very successful gardener. She had one of those and just hated it.

Don't overwater early on, or you will get mould. And if it dries out, the water will shrink from the sides. But beyond that, once you have watering figured out, your yields will be wonderful, and your plants will pretty much be pest and disease free.

I'm going to try it- thanks for the tips

We have an old swingset that we're moving near the garden and I'll probably hang them on that. I use planters alot for herbs, flowers and did tomato plants last year in pots. Once I got the watering down they did pretty good.

So, watering seems to be the issue. How do you not over water? I ask because I'm really, really bad at gardening... basically, I'm a black thumb!

It's easy. You just water half of however I water. Some things I grow really, really well, and lots of things I grow well but not here in central Arizona where it's so derned hot in the summer. One thing I have learned here though is to use a drip system on a timer. If it weren't for that my patio garden would be a dead issue. Right now out on the covered patio I have lotsa pots of almost-two-year-old Swiss chard plants, one BIG pot of potatoes, a pot of spearmint, a big pot of Big Beef tomatoes, a pot of Lakota winter squash, and aloe vera, all of which is flourishing on a drip system.

Looks hokey on the commercial. Right up there with the Flowbee Haircutting System and those viles of Miracle Water you can buy from Peter Popoff for a small love gift.

If you bought all 3 maybe you could plant the tomato plants in the upside down planter, water them with the Miracle Water, and trim them with the Flowbee.

Wash them with the Salad Spinner, slice them with the Ginsu knife on a Miracle Mat cutting board, gobble them down, then take a coupla *burp* Prilosecs for the heartburn.

No, you need to use the Slap Chop for the veges, that way you can work out your frustrations about the upside down planter, and then you clean up with the Sham Wow.

I meant to say that if you underwater it and it dries out the SOIL will shrink away from the sides. Duh. And that makes it hard to ever get it to hold water well again. So watch for that. On hot days, especially once the plants have begun flowering, we water twice a day.

Jamie Oliver uses them for everything from tomatoes to green beans to strawberries.

I've caught a few on reruns in the morning. I can see why the series is so popular. I want to see more :)

I didn't know it was still airing new episodes. I'm going to have to tivo a marathon. DH was enjoying them too.

Adrian Monk is so funny - the actor that plays him really has created a character that is very special - like Hawkeye Peirce or The Fonz, the character has a life all his own that will endure the ending of the show.

God Bless,
mik
