View Full Version : Not Peace but a Sword

Why does Jesus say, in Matthew 10:34-35, that he has not come to bring peace to the earth, but a sword?

This is where Jesus tells us that we must love Him above our own families, and be willing to lose our lives for Him. Anything less makes us unworthy of Him.

What is the sword that Jesus brings?

Wileyzmuse,

Good question. It reminded me that just before Christ went to the cross, He said "When I was with you, needed any of you neither scrip, or purse... but now I say to you, 'Take with you scrip purse, and if you have a cloak, sell it and buy a sword.'" (paraphrase from Luke 22:34-35.

I sure would like to hear the answer as well.

It's my understanding that it's speaking to the fact that He will bring peace to the world at a later time, and that, at this time, the effect of His truth, the sword, in this dark world will be divisions...

Heb 4:12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

That's my take on it too Dusty!

All it takes is just a quick glance at the world around you, to know that we (born-again Christians) are a thorn in their proberbial side.

Ahhh, one of my favorites!! I'm in agreement with Dusty and others. Christ causes divisions, even within families. He who loves father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me. (10:37)... He that loses his life for My sake, shall find it. (10:39) I found Jesus!:)

Yeah, it's almost like in the passage I paraphrased in which Christ was saying to His disciples, "sell your garment" [if need be] and buy a Bible/NT!

Matt 26:51 confirms that Jesus did not mean a literal sword -- He said, "All who live by the sword shall die by the sword" when Peter cut off the centurion's ear.

Paul seems to confirn that in Eph 6:17 "[Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God]...and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

And of course, when Christ returns, He defeats the armies of the world with the sword of His mouth -- with His word! Rev 1:16, 2:16, 19:15.

Good stuff
:cool

Ahhh, ok, now it's making more sense.

I especially like the 'sword of the spirit' part!! If you think of it in terms of the Holy Spirit being that sword, then all of a sudden we have reasoning for being 'slain in the spirit' ;)

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Look at Revelations and the description of Jesus with a sword coming out of His mouth.

The sword is the Word of God. The bible.
