John 15:
7 "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
8 "My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.
9 "Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.
10 "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.
11 "These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.
12 "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.
13 "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
14 "You are My friends if you do what I command you.
15 "No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.
16 "You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.
17 "This I command you, that you love one another.
I believe that we are to abide in Christ, and love as He loved. These are His commandments. Many may say that His commandments include the 613 laws within the Mosaic Covenant...but I don't.
Romans 10:
4 For Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
And we further know that the Mosaic Covenant has passed because Christ's blood initiated the New Covenant (see Hebrews 7 and 8).
It can be stated that if we abide in Christ and love as He loved we will be following 9 of the 10 Commandments at least. But I never like to mention this because people get confused and think the 10 Commandments are still in effect, while they're not. Nine of the 613 laws within the Law of Moses are in the Law of Messiah (Galatians 6:2). The Law of Moses has passed, and with it the 10 Commandments...see 2 Corinthians 3:
7 But if the ministry of death, in letters engraved on stones, came with glory, so that the sons of Israel could not look intently at the face of Moses because of the glory of his face, fading as it was,
8 how will the ministry of the Spirit fail to be even more with glory?
God's blessings in our glorious Messiah,

charlie,
Welcome! We haven't met. :cool
We follow His commandments when we are born again in the Spirit, period! Of course we cannot of ourselves follow any commandment -- it is not in us to do so. But the Spirit is given to us with our salvation in Christ and by it, whether we want to or not, we do God's commandments as if we were Christ. You see, that Holy Spirit begins to mold us into the image of Christ (Rom 8:29, Phil 1:6). We'll never be perfect as He is but when He appears, we shall be like Him.
What is Christ's first command? Ye must be born again. That's all there is to following His commands because once you have surrendered to His Spirit, you will begin to do as He did -- we obey His commandments and His commandments are not grievous," 1 John somewhere. :lol

1 John 3:23
23And this is his(God the Fathers) command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.
This goes along with the John 15 passage that pilgrimian cited.
1 John 3:5-12
9We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

AMEN to all of the above responses. The short answer, as I see it, is that we live in the age of grace under a new covenant. The law of Christ is "love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. All the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments.
LOVE is the key. Matthew 22:37-40

Amen, everyone, in agreement -- believing Christ and love.
1Jo 5:3
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
1Jo 3:23,24
...And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him.

Actually if you look at John 15:12 you will see we are to love as Christ loved us.
12 "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.
How much did Jesus love us? ENOUGH TO LEAVE HEAVENS GLORY TO SUFFER AND BLEED AND DIE AND RISE AGAIN THAT WE MIGHT LIVE WITH HIM ETERNALLY.
