My son, Sonny, who is 5 years old, has been asking lots of questions about God lately. And I'm having a bit of trouble talking to him about it. I have trouble trying to explain God to Sonny in ways that he will understand. For instance, yesterday, the question was, How come I can't hear God when he talks to me mommy? How do i answer that??? how can i explain that we don't hear God speak outloud like people do, that He speaks to us in all kinds of different ways? i tried my best, but i got that blank, what are you talking about you crazy lady, look

Then the next question was "Hey mommy, if i can't always hear God talk to me, how do i really know He hears me when I talk to Him?" well that one was easy, i just explained that God always hears us when we speak to him, that He is always listening and always there. But i just feel like my answers to his questions are inadequate to satisfy what Sonny is looking for.

Anyone have suggestions on how to explain these things to a 5 year old? Some of the questions he asks, are things i don't know the answer to either.

When Sonny asks why he can't hear God talking to him, don't forget to tell him he can hear God clearly in His word to us, the bible :nod. That is God's primary means of speaking to us today, because it is faith that pleases God. That's at least one reason (and enough for a 5 year old :lol) why He doesn't use audible voices.

Also, you can point out that God speaks to us in ways that we can understand. One of the best ways for your son to understand is through YOU, his parent :):. Tell Sonny that God gave him you to help him to know what God is saying and wants him to do, and that you learn through the Bible (and you can mention other ways, such as fellow Christians, etc, if Sonny can grasp them). As he gets older, God will change things a bit and expect Sonny to listen more on his own but for now, you're the one God is holding responsible for Sonny's spiritual guidance.
