EL CAJON, Calif. (BP)--A number of years ago, I attended a men's retreat at which the speaker challenged us to begin a practice he said would change our lives dramatically. I was ready to write down a complex spiritual formula, and I have to admit I was initially a little disappointed at what I heard: "There are 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs. I challenge you to read a chapter a day each month for the next year. If you do that faithfully for a year, you will have read the book of Proverbs 12 times and your life will never be the same."

I decided to accept his challenge. I was amazed at how many times I found myself in a situation during the day for which I had insight (or direction or a warning) taken directly from that day's reading in Proverbs. I came to the conclusion during that period of my spiritual life -- a conviction I continue to hold today -- that Proverbs offers the simplest, yet most profound, daily spiritual "pick-me-ups" to be found in all the Bible.

There is something that is almost mystical about God's word that we neglect. The power available to cleanse our minds. The power of wisdom beyond man's comprehension. The power that so many are craving that they try to seek in Scientology, Wicca and so many other cult formulas is only given to the believer and than power is granted by the Holy Spirit to do God's perfect will using man as a vessel. It is overwhelming, it is humbling. It is found when one immerses oneself in scripture and obeys what it says.

Truly fellow believers we must be immersing ourselves in His word daily and meditating on it day and night. This is not the time to be neglecting it. We need Him more now than ever.

I would encourage more posting with scripture so that those who read these threads will get a bit of scripture whenever they do. Encourage each other in the Word of God.

Ps 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

This is so absolutely true. Proverbs has many many answers for the specifics of our daily lives. It's only been recently that I've started applying the wisdom of Proverbs in my daily life. It's amazing how the Word can direct our paths.

Since the beginning of this year ~ 2 occasions have come up in my own life where I wasn't quite sure how to proceed, and both times the answer was clear as a bell in Proverbs.

God is just so intimate, so amazing!

While proverbs has good stuff in it, it's impossible to read only one chapter a day and have read each one 12 times by the end of the year since some months have less than 31 days. But there is some good advice in proverbs and a lot of it should be common sense.

I spent last week praying for wisdom, as it's something I desperately need in my profession, and what did God do? He started me on a study of Proverbs this past Saturday. :nod

I am trying to do the chapter, or part of a chapter, each day, in addition to my other scripture reading, and can't wait to see how God uses this book to illuminate my mind each day. He is definitely a very intimate God. He knew exactly what I needed and where to lead me when I needed it. I love when he does that! :yay

I read some of proverbs recently in the Bible I got when I was baptised. Tonight I read some proverbs in a little mini Bible (the kind Gideons handed out which I wish I'd kept more of them) and it seems to be different. I'm thinking of comparing the two more closely, but I don't remember reading what I read tonight in the other Bible.

As a Baby Christian the very first books I read through (absorbed like a sponge) were the gospels.

Then I seemed to move right on to Psalms and Proverbs. That was 30 years ago. I still turn to those 6 books all the time. They're foundation and lifeline books for the Christian imho
