Has anyone read this book by Ray Yungen?
It is really a scary book. The author give numerous examples of the results of emptying your mind--which is what happens in Contemplative prayer. This movement is moving into our churches very rapidly, and we need to discern if what is coming with it is of God.
The Contemplative prayer movement has been born of a desire of people for an "Experience" with God. The method of achieving this experience is through emptying your mind so you can receive a spiritual message. The Spirit that is being encountered in these times of sending your thoughts away is awakening the seekers to the divininty within. I can see why this movement is so seductive. Who doesn't want to feel like God is speaking to them, and who wouldn't like tingly feelings of love and energy? The results of these spiritual experiences are not pointing to Jesus though.
Be watchful! Don't empty your mind! Think about the ideas that want to implant themselves in your thoughts. Does the Spirit guiding you point to Jesus? Reading and understanding God's word is to be our method of getting to know God. If I could have figured out how to get to God and be acceptable to Him without Jesus, His suffering and sacrifice were meaningless!
Dear Father, Let us fall more in love with Jesus, as we study His sacrifice, and the sufficiency of the work He did on the cross. Keep us from relying on anything but Jesus to make us righteous. Reveal to us our inability to make ourselves godlike. Help us to share the good news--salvation through Jesus. I pray for discernment and protection for people who are desiring to encounter You. Protect them from the Evil Spirits. In Jesus name, Amen
