I was wondering what others' take on this was. I still do not have a job and can't really support the charities I used to as I'm going to be paying back loans. I do want to get a better computer eventually after I get a job and car, but is it sinful to want this when so many of my brothers and sisters are suffering around the world?

Of course not. It would only be sinful if God told you to do something else w/your money and you were disobedient.
God is about loving on His children. If your child wants something seemingly frivolous, like a doll... or a toy truck, is that sinful? No. Don't let the devil beat you up, w/that kind of stuff.

:hug IMHO, it is not sinful to want something but it IS sinful to be angry with neighbors/friends/co-workers that have something that you would like to have and are upset that they have when you [self] would be more deserving of "it". Ya know, coveting and all...

it is sinful if you want it too much, it's called idolatry.

If I'm looking at computers online and deciding which one I would like when I have a stable job to pay for it, would that be idolatry?

Depends on what's in your heart, check your heart why would you want it, for it not to be some form of filling any sinful craving, which would be wanting more the item than communion with God, that's the esence of idolatry. I would also think if you could be using that "web-eye-shopping" on another cause, especially of the eternal type? do i really need the computer at this point? because from casual surfing for stuff you are not planning to buy, can get to a point you are desiring material goods very badly and can become the center of your Heart moving JesusChrist aside.
if it's a desire, it isn't bad at all, to have a better computer, turn it to God so that you trust him for all your needs and desires, and not let things rule over you.

I really want it so I can play some of the more advanced RTS games out now as my system is too outdated to play them. The computer parts are what I'm looking for, though, and I basically build it online, but can't get it yet due to financial, ah, lacking.

I have found it best that whatever financial state I am in it is best not to shop. It is best to buy according to need but to go online or aimlessly wander through stores looking at all the items on display is not good for mental and spiritual health.
You create desires and even lusts that would not be there unless you had allowed them to be stirred. And no matter how much money you earn in life there will always be someone who can show you what you don't have and create a lust within you.
If you have need it is best to pray over it. Ask God to guide you and completely place the desire in His hands so that if He does not wish it for you then you ask Him to make the situation for you to acquire it fail.
I had a vehicle get totalled a few weeks ago by a driver who fell asleep and hit me nearly flip my vehicle over. I was taken out on a backboard but I am ok just sore. Last saturday I set with my wife to go the place I bought my last vehicle and find something to drive. I prayed and Ask God to help me not get my desires up so that if a care we decided to purchase did not go through I would suffer no dissappointment and realize He was picking out what I needed.
I ask God for the vehicle that I thought would be good. I ask for the terms that I needed to be able to purchase it.
The dealership did not sell the kind of vehicle I wanted. The first vehicle was not at all something I cared for. The next vehicle we were shown was exactly what I had in mind and yet it was suprising because this was not the dealerships brand. We got a phenominal price and terms were exactly what I had hoped for but even then I asked God to ruin the deal if He did not want it for me. Everything went smoothly and that was that.
We did not go store to store and look at a bunch of vehicles that were eleborate and way outside a respectable monthly cost for transportation. We did not get our desires stirred test driving vehicles that we had no business purchasing. But God blessed us with a nice vehicle that was practical. And I am not sitting here with buyers remorse wondering about my decision. Nor am I wondering when I am ever going to be able to afford that lambrogini.
Go to God with your need. Even explain your want. God loves to spoil you but does not want you spoiled so you are not useful to Him.
How will your computer help with His kingdom? It is when we seek His kingdom that He gives us the desires.
Mt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Or if the money didn't belong to you, or if you become obsessed with it.
