Maybe I am being a bit snotty with this, and I am open to correction.

But, is it just me, or do other's find it odd to call God "daddy" . I think it is just a little to personal.

Please enlighten me on this.

thanks in advance.

Yellowbo:

I have never heard that particular expression used by someone with reference to God. However "Abba" (which Jesus used as a term to refer to God, the father) is a Hebrew word that closely approximates "daddy" - it is a very intimate expression of Father - like a young child would use to call their father. I think that through Jesus Christ, we have access to an intimate relationship with God, the Father, that is otherwise not possible because of our sin. So I personally would not see a problem with it. (Just my view, of course).

The word abba occurs three times in scripture:

Blue Letter Bible
KJV English Concordance for "abba"
Learn More About Our Word Search Tools
abba occurs 3 times in 3 verses:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mar 14:36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things [are] possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rom 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gal 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

The following is from E-Sword:

Ἀββᾶ
Abba
ab-bah'
Of Chaldee origin [H2]; father (as a vocative): - Abba.

Vocative

adj.
Relating to, characteristic of, or used in calling.
Of, relating to, or being a grammatical case in certain inflected languages to indicate the person or thing being addressed.
n.
The vocative case.
A word or form in the vocative case.

I have always understand this term was a more familiar expression of the word "Father". Imho, God knows each of our hearts. Certainly we revere our Father God, but I truly believe that He desires our love, affection, devotion, praise, worship, and our total dependence on Him. So, I believe that He enjoys that type of sincere, deep, expression of love and honor when we address Him as Abba, Father.

I have to agree. There have been songs in church using "daddy" and I can't bring myself to sing that part. It just seems a bit irreverent and way too casual to me. IMHO

Well, He is a very personal Abba (papa).

I personally wouldnt use the word Daddy while praying, but I think its ok to use it. There has been many times in the past where He has felt like a loving Daddy and has protected me and comforted me like a Daddy, so I understand why people use the word.My problems is that even thought He is that close and personal to me, Hes still the great I AM, maker of heaven and earth and I feel I should honor Him more. Its getting the balance right, between having him so revered that we dont ever get to feel His love and belittling Him. When I think of the grandnes of His universe and how His plans are unfolding in our world every day, I'm in awe at His majesty and power and so I cant call Him Daddy.I'm not sure I've made any sense in replying to this, hope you know what I mean. :confused

He is my heavenly Father - I wouldn't call Him "daddy" - that is my earthly father's name. Our Lord Jesus Christ could call him Abba cause He was His Abba while He was on earth - mho :) <><

I call Him Abba Papa in prayer quite often. I have used Daddy on occasion but it's usually Father God or as I stated Abba Papa.

I call him "Daddy" sometimes. :nod

There has been many times in the past where He has felt like a loving Daddy and has protected me and comforted me like a Daddy...
This would be why I do so.

It's nothing disrespectful, in fact it's the opposite. I only felt comfortable doing this after I'd reached a real place of intimacy with him. It's actually one of the ways that I honor Him. I love Him enough and am comfortable with Him enough to be really personal with Him and not hide myself from Him. He really is my Dad in a way that I didn't understand for many years. :nod

I don't see it as disrespectful at all. Just the opposite. I don't use it, but I know people who do, and it's always with tenderness and reverance.

I don't have a problem with it. He's our Daddy, among many other things.

I know daddy is really like abba in talking to God, with love and in a more intimate way, but the problem i have with it is that in Spanish, the simil of daddy is "papito", and the thing is that it's in love but i consider it as dimishing my awe and praise for the Almighty Creator of the Universe, since this word's ending, "ito", is a diminutive, which conflicts a little with me but I still call him my "Dad" because he is still my father and What a Father He is.

I see what you all mean, but to me no human names really do Him justice for me anyway. When the doctors thought I was in the last hour of my life a few years back( guess what they were wrong :): ) even though He was craddling me in his arms, I knew how humbling it was. It was so awesome, that i ve never been able to explain it, theres just no human words that describe the feeling. :hail I have often tried but cant. The love of a beautiful daddy, is as near as we get to understanding, but it still limits Him. Right, now I'm getting in a muddle trying to explain what I mean, so I'll end and go into my closet and thank Him. Its such an intimate time,no one I love compares, but He still the great I AM. God bless :kiss

Well, He is a very personal Abba (papa).

Having recently met folks from Israel who call G-d intimite names such as "Ta" and "Abba" and "Papa" - I honestly have no issue for it.

It would depend on the usage to say whether it would set me off on edge or not... Most people I know who use this kind of appelation are very sincere... though I have met some that aren't..

Perhaps the problem with the use of daddy for some is that it's a casual word and our relationship with God is not casual. I can't see it's use in a song because it seems to me to go against giving reference in church.

As for personal use in prayer, that seems applicaple to me depending on the individuals relationship with God.

This is an interesting topic. I have heard of people that will not call their earthly dad, father b/c God is the only Father. I have always felt that Father is a respect term. I seem to use it more as a sign of respect and as a way of humbling myself before God. But I have always felt that God is to be respected as well as loved. I find love to be strong and tender. Comforting and defending. A balance, so I don't see why Father and Daddy wouldn't apply to God. It does seems to be a situation term though and a personal decision. If you feel you are being respectful and upholding Jesus example than I see nothing wrong with it. But who are we to judge? I believe the Holy Spirit would be a better scale to measure this one with. If it felt wrong to say it, I wouldn't.

I dont have a problem with people calling God daddy either I just personally cant do it. I am in such awe of him that I also humble myself to him. Not to say anyone who calls him daddy is not being humble to him. It is a personal choice. He is our father

I have always thought abba meant "dearest father", not daddy... I also feel wierd when people call Him daddy... I dont know why, its just odd... I always picture God as being so majestic and powerful, yet loving and gentle. More like a father to be honored than to be played with. Just my opinion. :):

Calling Him "Daddy" isn't seeing Him as someone to be played with. It's just one way of being intimate with Him. :nod

I wouldn't say it's wrong, but for me, it is something I would be uncomfortable saying. The same goes for calling earthly dads "father", as I have only one Father, and he is in Heaven. I believe there is actually a scripture verse about not calling your earthly parent "father," but I can't find it right now. I've taught my children to only call God the Father, "father," and to call their dad "dad" or "daddy" or "pop" or whatever.
