I'm looking for a couple good charities. I'm thinking of the Salvation army locally, and maybe an Israeli charity as well...
What all do you guys give too? Any suggestions for me?

My Dh and I give to ifcj (International Federation of Christians and Jews), we like the guardians of israel charity through them. A large majority of Israel is below the poverty level. They also have other charities for Aliyah, rebuilding, security etc, so you can give to what interests you.

I recently learned of the "world compassion ministies" which trains Christians to witness to Muslims as well as providing medicines, Bibles!, and shoes to children in Iraq...they also have started churches in iraq and one in Afganistan.
Personally, we have a sponser child in India through Compassion (the older one...) and our church tithes all the monies that come in to various charities and missionaries...I will get the list if you would like - it has the names addresses, phone #s and websites (if applicable) to all that they sponser...

Besides my church and a local homeless shelter, I also give regularly to International Christian Concern (http://www.persecution.org/newsite/index.php), a ministry which seeks to aid Christians who are suffering persecution and their families. I like the scope and effect of their ministry, and I'm encouraged about their financial accountability by the fact that they have a 4-star rating on Charity Navigator (http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm/bay/search.summary/orgid/7690.htm).

I am on the Board of Disabled Firefighters Fund, it is dedicated to lending a helping hand to those brave individuals in their time of need. Just as they have served to lend aid and comfort, there are times when these men and women need our support as well.

Our church is rather small so our tithe goes to help pay the bills and support our missionary group, but our time is given to a local food pantry that is run by some amazing people who are dead set on making a difference in Detroit.
