Help! I'm going to go to church for the first time on Sunday. I'm going to try out a Baptist church first, and if it's not what I'm looking for, I'll try a Presbytarian, United, etc until I find something that feels right.
Anyway, I am a student, and I just realized that I have nothing to wear but jeans and t-shirts. I want to make a good impression, but this is really all I have. Is this acceptable? I am so embarrased :redface
Please help,
jera

Don't be embarrassed. As long as your clothes are clean and not revealing (no bare midriffs, bra straps not exposed, clothing not too tight) I don't see any problem with wearing Levis and a tee shirt.

i like to dress up... but, i can afford it and would not expect others to have to make a good impression.

Hey Jera, I agree with the others, try to wear clean, non-revealing clothes and don't worry about the rest. :nod

LOL at Calvary Chapel we go to no one dresses up, even the fellah at the podium going over the chapter of the week.
Just straight Bible teaching, no frills, including the wardrobe :thumb

dress as if you are going for an interview. (you will need these outfits for a job interview, anyway)
you can find cheap dresses at thift stores if you don't feel comfortable wearing jeans.

Jeans and tshirts are fine. If the church has a problem with that, then I would find another church.

My theory is you're going to church to worship. Not to try to catch somebody's romantic interest or compare fashions. I agree with what has been said; dress in clean, non-revealing clothes that you are comfortable in.

As long as you are covered- I wouldn't give it a second thought. If people are going to look down on you for not being dressed up, I agree find another church!
One thing I love about our church is I can show up wearing whatever and still receive a hug at the door and not a condesending look.

I usually wear jeans and a nice top. Most others do the same.

Of course jeans and a t-shirt are acceptable. You have no reason to be embarrassed. We Christians are the house of God. We are the body of Christ. That building with a cross of the roof is just a place where portions of the body of Christ meet to fellowship with one another because we can't all fit in someone's living room.

I wear slacks and a casual top. I never wear dresses. We also have people who wear jeans. Not a problem. The last Church I went to was down on the coast and people would come to church in shorts and print shirts.

It was 112 here yesterday. People who normally come in suits were wearing shorts and t-shirts.

I wear jeans and a tshirt to my church. Its all about the condition of your heart, not what you wear.

I agree, but sometimes what we wear is a reflection of the condition of our heart. Low cut jeans with a thong purposely showing and a low cut shirt that does not cover the belly, can be a reflection of someones heart. Modesty is important.

Hi everyone! I thought I would give an update.
So I went to church for the first time yesterday (yay!). I was wearing jeans and a blouse. Everyone was really friendly and showed me around. I was sitting by myself and a really nice woman turned around and said "would you like to sit next to me?". I was so happy. She answered some of my questions about the Baptist church, and she took me around and introduced me to everyone.
It was such a wonderful time, praise the Lord! I was overtaken by emotion (I had to fight back tears during some of the hymns). I was shown the baptism place, and there was beautiful stained glass behind it. I am so excited to get baptised.
Anyway, thanks for the advice on what to wear!
God bless,
jera

Jera,
First, I'm happy for you that you want to make this first effort to attend a church service. May God guide your path.
Next, going to a church service is not an endevour to impress those around you in the service. Your focus should be on worshipping God and giving Him praise all the while doing this among a community of fellow worshipers.
As far as your attire, I think my answer is going to be a bit different from what most of the others have said so far. I would suggest you wear the best you have. If it is a relatively new pair of jeans, and a nice Rated G T-shirt, and your newest pair of sneakers, so be it. But if it could be nicer than that, all the better.
I say this not on the level that these clothes should try to point to you as something special, but point to the fact that what you are doing there is something special. One's mindset in attending a church service is important. If it is the "activity" that just happens to fall between Sunday breakfast, and baseball practice at 11:30 Sunday morning, then I would suggest that is not a good mindset. What you wear to breakfast is just as "useful" as what you wear to church and then to baseball practice. But if a Sunday service is viewed by you as the pinnacle of your Sunday, then by wearing clothes that are uniquely different, and uniquely "nicer" than what you plan to wear for the rest of your Sunday, it is a witnessing device to others, and an outward statement in general that, yes, giving praise and worship to God is special and important to you.
Now, since this will be your first visit to a service, I'm guessing you may not have this current mindset. So, for you, wearing nicer clothes simply for the reason I described really, would be a false statement for you. Do not be embarrased by what you wear. I'm sure the members will be very welcoming to you.
For future reference though, consider this. If you were invited to the White House, the President's house, what attempt if any would you make to aquire clothing other than your jeans and T-shirt? If this secular experience would inspire you to wear better than average, if not your best clothes, how much more inspired might you be to come to in share in a sacred experience at the house of the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords?
Let me address something else you mentioned. You described your intention of attending church after church until you find one that "feels right". As a challenge to you, rather than looking for a church that holds to your beliefs and ways of thinking, search for a church that holds to the beliefs and ways of thinking that you too should hold.

Praise God!.
One thing to keep in mind if you are not provided a gown for your baptism: you might want to wear something that doesn't disappear when wet. If you know what I mean.

At our church we were casual clothes too. Tshirts and shorts in summer, jeans, etc. God doesn't care what's on the outside.....only what's inside of our hearts!

If you REALLY want to shock people, men should wear suits and ties and women should wear dresses and nice shoes. :Faint :lol Jeans, mini's, tats, piercings just don't do it anymore :noidea
I'd go with the clean clothes that cover everything up.

Most Baptist churches will provide gowns for this occasion, to not have one of these would almost be like not having an offering plate. :lol
I'm comfortable wearing blue jeans and nice Tshirt, but I end up usually wearing pants (Dockers like) and a "Golf/Polo" shirt.
I once wore shorts to a wednesday night service at a church I went to long ago, wednesday nights were very casual. The Associate Pastor who was my mentor and best friend at the time was preaching. I came in a little late that night and grabbed a spot on the front row, big mistake. During the sermon he paused and said, "Nice legs, Adam". I've never worn shorts to church again.
