I am wondering if any other areas are seeing a very low enrollment number for the incoming kindergarten school year? my kids school is usually a very packed school, this last year alone they had over 300 hundred kindergartners, but this new year , the first post 9-11 (being conceived after 9-11 and going into kindergarten) only has 65 children enrolled....and while that number is expected to go up , its a very real concern for the schools that enrollment will be an all time low...and because schools recieve money based on the number of students enrolled and attending, having a low kindergarten class can mean major budget cuts...maybe even jobs...have any of you heard how your cities are doing?

going from 300 to 65 seams like a big drop. :freaked
Maybe they made up for it the next year?
Or have they opened a school or redrawn the boundries since then?

Our district commented on declining kindergartener enrollement for next year too. Ours isn't a huge drop (we are a small district) only about 10 kids (from having around 80 some to 70 some) But who knows by fall the numbers may be up again.
I just commented because I never thought of 9-11 having to do with it. hmmm.... who knows...

Actually where I live kids born post 9/11 won't enter kindergarten until next year because their birthdays are too late in the year. Children must be 5 by the end of Aug. in order to begin kindergarten that year.

no new boundries or new schools( I wish my kids school is over 90 years old)
I am sure the numbers will go up before fall, but usually by this time they have over half the enrollment completed. They start kindergarten testing next week and there calender is empty...
I think here you have to be 5 by oct 31st to be able to register for that year...
I had never even thought about 9-11 being a factor, but I guess the fear of what would the future be like could very much have an effect on conception....

I think the only way to know for sure would be to get the hospital birth records for several years (decades?) running and see if there was an unusual drop or bump in births around that time, and see what it's done since.

My pastor told us in church that the amount of kids that people are having in declining from 2.5 to 1.4 since early 2000. Anybody else heard this? Maybe there is less kids needing to go to K since people are having less children

off the topic , but we did this too, held back both our boys from starting kindergarten at 5 and put them in pre k first...it was a good decsion, my oldest was only 5 in july so wasn't ready at all in august....best choice we ever made, he is a straight A student now and very self confident
