I have a informative speech due in two weeks for my college speech class.
I want to do something about God. I've thought about explaining like the top five reasons why people don't turn to God and rebuttal each one or maybe even outline end times prophecy although that may take longer than the 5 minutes allotted. Any suggestions and or reference sites for this would be much apprectiated.
God bless ~ nick

I did a philosophy presentation on determinism vs. indeterminism. Fairly short, but with some spiritual implications, especially when discussed from a biblical perspective.

How about a speech on the validity of the NT? Maybe take the top 5 reasons it's reliable?

The Way of the Master's site by Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron is a wonderful place to find sound ideas.
They have a book on 100 scientific evidences in the Bible. It is an awesome tool that non-believers just can't ignore.
Here is a link to a description of the book. Their site though has a lot of free stuff you can listen to online for great tools and info. Ray or Kirk will even personally respond to your question if you write or call.

Science And The Bible
The Bible and Earths Free-float in Space
At a time when it was believed that the earth sat on a large animal or a giant (1500 B.C.), the Bible spoke of the earths free float in space: "He . . . hangs the earth upon nothing" (Job 26:7). Science didnt discover that the earth hangs upon nothing until 1650.
The Scriptures Speak of an Invisible Structure
Only in recent years has science discovered that everything we see is composed of things that we cannot seeinvisible atoms. In Hebrews 11:3, written 2,000 years ago, Scripture tells us that the "things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."
The Bible Reveals that the Earth is Round
The Scriptures tell us that the earth is round: "It is he that sits upon the circle of the earth" (Isaiah 40:22). The word translated "circle" here is the Hebrew word chuwg, which is also translated "circuit" or "compass" (depending on the context). That is, it indicates something spherical, rounded, or arched not something that is flat or square. The book of Isaiah was written sometime between 740 and 680 B.C. This is at least 300 years before Aristotle suggested, in his book On the Heavens, that the earth might be a sphere. It was another 2,000 years later (at a time when science believed that the earth was flat) that the Scriptures inspired Christopher Columbus to sail around the world.
The Bible and the Science of Oceanography
Matthew Maury (18061873) is considered the father of oceanography. He noticed the expression "paths of the sea" in Psalm 8:8 (written 2,800 years ago) and said, "If God said there are paths in the sea, I am going to find them." Maury then took God at His word and went looking for these paths, and we are indebted to his discovery of the warm and cold continental currents. His book on oceanography remains a basic text on the subject and is still used in universities.
The Bible and Radio Waves
God asked Job a very strange question in 1500 B.C. He asked, "Can you send lightnings, that they may go, and say to you, Here we are?" (Job 38:35). This appears to be a scientifically ludicrous statement that light can be sent, and then manifest itself in speech. But did you know that all electromagnetic radiation from radio waves to x-raystravels at the speed of light? This is why you can have instantaneous wireless communication with someone on the other side of the earth. The fact that light could be sent and then manifest itself in speech wasnt discovered by science until 1864 (3,300 years later), when "British scientist James Clerk Maxwell suggested that electricity and light waves were two forms of the same thing" (Modern Century Illustrated Encyclopedia).
The Bible and Entropy
Three different places in the Bible (Isaiah 51:6; Psalm 102:25,26; and Hebrews 1:11) indicate that the earth is wearing out. This is what the Second Law of Thermodynamics (the Law of Increasing Entropy) states: that in all physical processes, every ordered system over time tends to become more disordered. Everything is running down and wearing out as energy is becoming less and less available for use. That means the universe will eventually "wear out" to the extent that (theoretically speaking) there will be a "heat death" and therefore no more energy available for use. This wasnt discovered by science until recently, but the Bible states it in concise terms.
The Bible and the Water Cycle
The Scriptures inform us, "All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, there they return again" (Ecclesiastes 1:7). This statement alone may not seem profound. But, when considered with other biblical passages, it becomes all the more remarkable. For example, the Mississippi River dumps approximately 518 billion gallons of water every 24 hours into the Gulf of Mexico. Where does all that water go? And thats just one of thousands of rivers. The answer lies in the hydrologic cycle, so well brought out in the Bible.
Ecclesiastes 11:3 states that "if the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth." Look at the Bibles concise words in Amos 9:6: "He . . . calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out upon the face of the earth." The idea of a complete water cycle was not fully understood by science until the seventeenth century. However, more than two thousand years prior to the discoveries of Pierre Perrault, Edme Mariotte, Edmund Halley, and others, the Scriptures clearly spoke of a water cycle.
The Bible and the First Law of Thermodynamics
The Scriptures say, "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them" (Genesis 2:1). The original Hebrew uses the past definite tense for the verb "finished," indicating an action completed in the past, never again to occur. The creation was "finished" once and for all. That is exactly what the First Law of Thermodynamics says. This law (often referred to as the Law of the Conservation of Energy and/or Mass) states that neither matter nor energy can be either created or destroyed.
It was because of this Law that Sir Fred Hoyles "Steady-State" (or "Continuous Creation") Theory was discarded. Hoyle stated that at points in the universe called "irtrons," matter (or energy) was constantly being created. But, the First Law states just the opposite. Indeed, there is no "creation" ongoing today. It is "finished" exactly as the Bible states.
The Bible and Ship Dimensions
In Genesis 6, God gave Noah the dimensions of the 1.5 million cubic foot ark he was to build. In 1609 at Hoorn in Holland, a ship was built after that same pattern (30:5:3), revolutionizing ship-building. By 1900 every large ship on the high seas was inclined toward the proportions of the ark (verified by "Lloyds Register of Shipping" in the World Almanac).
The Bible and Meteorological Laws
The Scriptures describe a "cycle" of air currents two thousand years before scientists discovered them: "The wind goes toward the south, and turns about unto the north; it whirls about continually, and the wind returns again according to his circuits" (Ecclesiastes 1:6). We now know that air around the earth turns in huge circles, clockwise in one hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the other.
The Bible and Science
"In antiquity and in what is called the Dark Ages, men did not know what they now know about humanity and the cosmos. They did not know the lock but they possessed they key, which is God. Now many have excellent descriptions of the lock, but they have lost the key. The proper solution is union between religion and science. We should be owners of the lock and the key. The fact is that as science advances, it discovers what was said thousands of years ago in the Bible." Richard Wurmbrand, Proofs of Gods Existence

Since the day has only just passed and will no doubt be fresh in everyone's mind, you could talk about the meaning of 666. Obviously there are a few pretty good interpretations of it (is it Nero, is it the barcode, is it the number short of God in a trinity format?)
You could even start the speech with a focus. For instance, if you had access to a TV and DVD player you could play a 30 second bit of The Omen, the part where the priest is talking about the number on Damien's head. That would certainly get everyone's attention.
YOu could even sum up the speech with something like, "At least we can all agree on one thing, the number 666 is an excellent marketing tool (and then point out that Ann COulter's book came out on 6/6/06, as did TIme LaHaye's book, as did the re-release of the Omen.

Thanks for all the feedback I think I will do a speech on the explanation of 666 and it's impact, with an emphasis on why people seem to find that being just good and moral will good you into heaven.
thanks guys

Just want to give you some food for thought - I was talking to my sister yesterday about this date and she moaned.
Most people look at that as superstition (and even for Christians it really is because we can guess all day long but until the Lord reveals the meaning, it is just guessing)
Of all the things for you to talk about as a Christian, this one gives us the least credibility. I really wish you would re-consider.
I personally, find it to be a 'man-made' hullabaloo and not precious facts like those listed in the scientific facts by Ray Comfort such as:
In the book of Job, it talks about the earth hanging from the heavens - only the creator would have known that.
And circumcision - why the 8th day? They have just discovered that on the 8th day of life, the coagulant to stop bleeding is at its highest peak. Only the creator would have know that There are so many more - please use the many facts available to us - not superstitions about a number.

Just so you know my INFORMATIVE speech was to show people that 666 is a number given to us in Revaltions to show the number of the antichrist. Not some hollywood junk that the devil will possess some child or the earth is gonna explode, the cold hard biblical facts and the relationship it has with people not caring or just like you said moaning at the sound of it. I haven't written it yet but with all the crap floating around in the media today I thought it would be perfect. Maybe you could direct me to facts outside of the bible to HELP me instead of telling me that people won't listen because of superstitions. I was starting my speech off to explain what 666 stood for and the delve into end time prophecy and why being a good and moral person doesn't grant you access to the Kingdom.

Please, please forgive me if I have upset you. I was simply sharing my experiences and my thoughts. I did not mean to cause you anger.
I did provide a link and quite a bit of information in my earlier post regarding Ray Comfort's site on facts. It was quite a lengthy post so I am not sure that it could be missed. Did I not provide something in that post that you would need?
Again, please forgive me as I never meant to cause you to respond with such anger.

Eons ago, when I was green as grass, one of my college profs taught us "Religion". This was at a Christian College. I was highly upset at her teachings. One of the things that she taught was that the Red Sea the Israelites crossed could not have been a sea. She said it was the Reed Sea. This has bothered me for years.
Then, not long ago, I happened to see a tv documentary about "Walking the Bible." In this, the moderator explained that he had never really understood all this either until he walked the trail the Israelites took.
They lived north of the reed sea area. They took a path that led them to what is now called the --oh I can't remember. But anyway it is actually a large body of water just like our great lakes. It was indeed a sea. And to cross it took a lot of time in a boat.
The narrator said this was where the Israelites came to a stop. They had no other route. They had the sea in from of them and the army behind them.
That is when Moses held up his hands and the waters parted. Not only parted, but the ground became dry.
When the army came upon them, they were across. And when Moses let his arms down, the waters came together again. This is the only possible explanation of this part of the Israelites journey.
I am going to try to order the DVD of this documentary. It is very interesting with the modern day people who travel the route that the Israelites traveled. They all still tell the story of Joseph. They seem to know him personally. And, after all, in that culture, the story tradition is the way that history was carried down to the generations.
They try to keep all the facts as true as possible. It is their history.
This was a really good story and settled the question for me, for which I am thankful.
Sandy
