I have been looking for a new Bible. I saw a Bible called "The Quest". It is NIV with questions and answers in the margins. I am not looking for a study Bible (already have a good one). I need a good reading Bible, one that I can pick up and read for 5 minutes or 5 hours. Any thoughts one the one I mentioned?

I read NIV and always keep my paraphrased KJV open for clarification. Hope this helps. I believe KJV is the Word of God in its purest form. It's sometimes hard to understand but there are excellent teaching tools out there to help interpret.

Thanks. Did you hear of one called "The Quest". I looked at it today and it looked pretty good.

Three ideas, The first is from the Byzantine tradition (same source type as the KJV uses) called the "Modern King James" with Jay Green as the general editor. The second idea is the NASB which is maybe the most literal/accurate english translation produced in quantity. Last but not least is "The Answer" which is a New Century Version of the Bible which is supposed to be a very easy read.

I LOVE the NASB version. I used to have "The Quest" NIV Bible up until I lost it about 3 or 4 years ago. I absolutely LOVED it. I loved the questions that it had on the side and the maps and everything. It was a great Bible. However, after recently comparing the NIV to the NASB version, I don't like the NIV version. It translates a little differently AND varies on what it includes in some verses.
As far as using "The Quest"... it's definitely a good Bible to use. I wonder if they have an NASB one. :noidea

For what you said that you are looking for, I would suggest the NIV, New Living Translation or the New Revised Standard Version.

Yeah I guess I would suggest NASB or NKJV.

Gotta love NASB! :D: You might also like to try getting a Comparative Bible (just make sure one of the translations is NASB!! :lol)

Thank you all for your suggestions. It seems that NASB is the way to go. Now if I can just find "The Quest" in NASB, I will be all set.:D:

Did you find that the answera to the questions were on target. This was my only concern when I picked it up at Lifeway. When I statred reading it, however, I could not put it down. I almost bought it on the spot. I used to have a Dakes bible, I liked the explanations it offered, but it was hard to read.

I have seen the Quest Bible (NIV) and it looks terriffic. I have the new Archeological Study Bible and it's also NIV, and I absolutely love it. You need to get a bible that God leads you to get. NIV, NASB, and NKJV are all good bibles, ask God to help you decide which one to get, and you'll be happy.

For reading, I love my NIV Student Bible, Large Print. It's also marketed as the Adult Version.

For study I usually look up original language, and use the KJV and NASB to double check the verses, but all my notes are in my NIV because I use it the most.

I have a Dakes "large print" Bible and I still have to use reading glasses to read it!

This is to be expected when the NASB follows the Aland process and the NIV uses the Wescott-Hort process. When you start with similar but different sources you end up with similar but different results...

If you find the NIV easy to read, then go with it. If you are concerned with it not being a little more literal, then I might suggest the ESV, which is more literal than the NIV in places yet reads very easy IMO. I still use the NASB for study, but it just too "wooden" to pick up at late at night or early in the morning to read for any length of time.

Good day to all.
I have found the Holman Christian Standard version to be a good read.
The New Living Translation is quite easy to read also.
If you are versed in Greek or Hebrew I would suggest the original language.

I know what you mean. Just how many words can fit on one page? Dakes must hold the record!

I have a Quest bible in both the NIV and NLT but currently I am using a NKJ and love that also. I think the added info / study helps in the Quest Bible are great and a NIV translation is easy to understand and popular so you would probably be happy with it. I have found as I learn and grow my need for different versions has change also. I am very pleased with the NKJ that I am currently using but who knows by next year I may very well be reading a King James in its original form.

:freaked I would recommend staying away from Dakes...he had some peculiar views...such as God living on a planet, just for starters...

Yeah, he does have some "out there" views. But I like his explanation of creation and much of Genesis. Kinda like eating the fish and spitting out the bones with Dakes. It is not for the baby Christian.

...It is not for the baby Christian.

It's not for any Christian, IMO. He also messes with the Divinity of Jesus (see his very first notation in Matthew). Some I know use it for prophecy study because of his extensive notes, but a guy who was pre-trib and didn't believe Jesus was God until the Cross just doesn't mix well in my mind. There are other Study Bibles by solid pre-trib guys who don't assail the Nature of God, such as Ryries, Scofields and others.

I had the Quest study bible, but when KJVonlyist got ahold of me I thought it was of the devil so I took all my bibles to good will.....:tape
Well I found out the truth and well I have all kinds of translations now.
I use the ESV mostly now....

I would be the first to agree with you that Dake's Bible is NOT for young christians or even for ministers who do not have time to do their own research. On the other hand if you are a mature christian with a Berean mindset Dake's Bible has a ton of usefull material. Remember, we are to search the scriptures ourselves instead of depending on others to do it for us.

Agreed. I said as much in a later post. My warning would be for any (but especially a young) Christian NOT to take much of his theology in. I still have a Dakes...I keep it on the shelf right next to my Apologetics and Cult books.

As far as I remember, It's right on target. I don't remember all of what the answers were like. I just remember liking the Bible a lot and learning a lot from it. I've learned even more and when that happens, you can't always recall where you learned it from. :doh lol

Another Bible I really like:

The Interlinear Bible (Hebrew/Greek/English)

For home study though, it's too big to carry around. :lol

I very recently ordered a Amplifed Bible, but haven't received it as of yet. Does anyone here use one and if so how does it read (hard, easy?) I also use NIV, so I wanted something to compare. Make sure I'm understanding the scriptures correctly.

the quest is an awesome Bible. i dont use it but i know someone who does. NKJV is another good translation that is easy to read.

NCV is great. its an easy read but keeps alot of accuracy. (I use NIV and NKJV)

The amplified is a nice bible, it does take some getting use to reading , since it has parentheses around the amplifed descriptions of the verse..... But I suspect it is just a learning curve type thing.
I picked one up for my dad, he really likes it.

For Bible software, I highly recommend e-Sword too. I find it easier to use and more powerful than the other "for-pay" software packages. And now that I've been able to get NKJV, NIV, and NASB translation modules for it, it is even more useful.

In general though, I recommend owning at least 3 translations in hardcopy. KJV being one of them. (NKJV and NASB are my other two.)

KJV w/Scofield Notes, NKJV Nelson Study bible, NASB w/References.
