I attend a catholic church. On sunday, the head priest at my church was supposed to do the homily. Well, instead of a homily, we received the ushers passing out applications asking for money for the archbishops annual appeal. i mean, i understand asking for money, but come on! do you really have to interrupt mass and deprive us of a homily to ask for money?
sorry, just a rant i had..
edit: i have to add that they have been asking for money for the past couple of months for the archbishops appeal. i guess the deadline is up and they needed some more money that they felt it couldnt wait to set up a desk outside the church to accept donations...

i don't know; obviously this isn't a usual thing that happens in your church - what is this money for? I don't really understand <><

Explain to us what this money is for? Do the archbishops get the money? I was raised Catholic but left the church when I was 18 so I never had to deal with any financial aspects of the church.

I recall lots of "special collections" while growing up in the Catholic church. These were extra, not instead of, the regular Sunday collection. Never had one take place instead of the sermon, though, as a kid I would've loved that.:laugh

Perhaps they need it to pay for all those lawsuits they lost?

the money is for the archbishops annual appeal, which is a yearly call for money in the archdiocese. the money goes to a great cause to build schools and churches in the diocese, and im all for it, and i did donate money, but i just thought it wasnt right to interrupt a mass to ask for money and forget about the homily completely.

That happens several times a year at my parents' Catholic church...a money pitch for the homily for one cause or another.
Not the sermons are usually good anyway..."social gospel" and/or the same homily over and over again. Same at school...except we students are all too poor there for the church to make money pitches that often to us!
At least they read from the Old Testament, New Testament, and the Epistles, which is more Scripture covered than the seeker-sensitive churches or Christian fellowships on campus. Not like I get anything out of them either.
