well, to start it off, my parents are financially blessed. but that isn't a good thing when you are trying to get financial aid for college. so the first semester i had to pay for everything for myself. i had to get two jobs. after the first semester i was in a defict for the school for $1,635. i went home feeling defeated even though my grades were good. (gpa was a 3.29). i went back to college on faith asking God to help me this semester. i really, really did not want to stay home with my parents. i had somewhere to stay temporarily for the moment but was just living on their couch. i couldn't even register for college classes because i had no money and still owed for last semester. well today was the last day to register for classes at 4:30. it was 1:04 and i was still thinking how to get atleast $194 for two classes. well, a few minutes later i got a phone call from germany from my friend's parent. she said "tell me how much you need so i can let this woman know. she is going to pay for everything you owe from last semester and this semester. wow!!! what a blessing. i think i am loosing my voice from telling everyone i encounter about this story. i think i am going to take a nap and a tylenol. :wave :clap i hope this story encourages those who are in some hard times. it only last a season. just always hold on to faith. peace out and God bless.

God bless you! And yes, that is EXACTLY how God has worked a number of times in our lives through the years. Right up to the last minute and then something special that encourages our faith and the faith of everyone we tell the story to. Have a wonderful semester and go with God!

Only one question ... do your parents think they are going to be able to take their "financial blessing" with them when they die?

The reason you can't get finincial aid from usual sources is because programs are set up for kids with parents who are poor.

Not for kids who's parents are cheap.

Sorry I know it isn't your fault, but I hear stories like yours all of the time and it just boils my blood ... parents who are "well to do" and their kids unable to get a formal education. :tsk

Thank God He over ruled them.

The Guard pays for my college, books, and then some. It's worth it IMHO.

I believe in the pre pay college funds that many states have set up. However of course, not all can or do participate.

It sure makes it easier come time for that "formal education".

yeah, i agree. my parents are not frugal by any means, but sometimes i just don't understand the things that they do. they just want me to work for everything that i do. i mean i thought that every generation was supposed to be better off then the one before it. i understand some of things they do but other times it like.:doh :freaked :fear :faint

However today things such as education is competitive not collaborative. Without the hand up ... you don't get there.

It's a fact.

Years ago it was "smart" to save up the cash to buy a house. Today that for the most part would be impossible. The average house price in my city is over $300,000. By the time you would be able to save up $300,000 ... houses would cost $3 Million.

So it is much smarter to borrow to buy a house today and pay it off over time.

So to save up $50,000 or so to fund a college degree might take you into your 30s ... kinda late to start school.

Are there good programs out there now days?

When I looked into going to college back in the 70's when I graduated there just wasn't much available in the way of student loans... at least the school counselers weren't very helpful in assisting me in finding any. And while I got decent grades they weren't good enough for a sizable scholarship. I knew my folks couldn't afford to pay for "real" college so opted for a trade school hoping I could work my way through later on. Never happened.

Fast forward 30 years and now my son is a couple years away from college and we make less than my parents did when you figure what dollars are worth now vs. then. So no $$ saved up for college. We barely get by from paycheck to paycheck. And we don't live high off the hog by any stretch of the imagination. Is there better programs available now for kids for the student loans? I would hope we would qualify so my son can go to college... and not trade school if he so chooses.

Just wondering and curious to see what others are doing on this matter. He's smart with math and science... his grandpa was a Dr.... but, our parents were far better off than my generation... at least it's true with me and my friends.

Maybe they are putting away for retirement? or living on a Measured amount for Retirement? I dont know but Even one of the Nations Leading FINANCIAL planners-Clark Howard WWW.Clarkhoward.com ALWAYS advises one to save for retirement before EVER putting a penny into college funds! at the very least you can contribute to a IRA or a simple Savings account that Draws Interest (Unlike a college fund) and ***if*** you (the parent) are able to help or pay for the childs college then fine! if not there are MANY programs for College.... IMHO They dont sound cheap but smart in there finances...
