The Subtle Danger of Spiritual Adultery

Much is said regularly from the pulpits of Christendom about the sin of adultery. This type of adultery is physical adultery, and is of the flesh, and usually begins with some type of persuasion and seduction. But there is another type of adultery that is almost completely overlooked and rarely discussed, and that is the sin of spiritual adultery. This type of adultery similarly begins with some type of persuasion and seduction.

The Power of Persuasion and Seduction

Persuasion is a powerful thing. By inspiration, the Apostle Paul explains emphatically how he is persuaded that nothing is able to separate us from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Persuasion can also have a negative side or a false side. For example, the Apostle Paul corrects and informs the saints at Galatia that they had come under a false persuasion.

Galatians 5:8 This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you.

Scripture indicates how false doctrine can come through the power of persuasion via enticing words. To entice someone means to attract them by arousing hope or desire, or to set them “on fire.”

Colossians 2:4 And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.

I Corinthians 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power

Romans 16:18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

False persuasion that comes via enticing words will be seductive. To seduce someone means to attract them, to lure them, and to lead them astray.

I Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils

The result of seduction is a departure (i.e. going astray). As will be demonstrated later, this seduction to a “departure from the faith” described in the verse above is not in the context of salvation, as the believer is eternally secure, but of the Christian’s walk.

One definition of the word “persuade” is to win someone over, as by reasoning or personal forcefulness. This definition helps demonstrate that the lure of false doctrine can come both from the words themselves, as well as the speaker’s personality or eloquent speech. Both can be enticing and seductive at the same time. In other words, false persuasion can come from not only what is said, but how it is said. In regards to the latter, it is interesting to examine the Apostle Paul’s self-reflection on his method of speech or speaking. To the Saints at Corinth, he explained that the delivery method of his verbal message was somewhat lacking.

I Corinthians 2:1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

II Corinthians 11:6 But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but we have been throughly made manifest among you in all things.

When a speaker is captivating with “excellency of speech,” the dedicated Berean needs to be extra diligent in taking the words that are spoken, and measuring them against the word of God “rightly divided” (Acts 17:11, II Timothy 2:15).

II Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

The term “itching ears” is interesting to consider in the context of false persuasion. What do you do with an itch? You scratch it! Through this analogy, the Apostle Paul is indicating that false persuasion will be attractive to your flesh and your fleshly mind. The lust of the flesh always “itches,” and false persuasion will “scratch” that itch.

Forgeries and Counterfeits

Sir Robert Anderson rightly observed that “the devil of Christendom is a myth,” and how many Christians carry a false understanding of how Satan operates, particularly in the Dispensation of Grace. The realm of the flesh and temptation of the flesh is falsely held as being Satan’s primary realm of operation. It is in the spirit realm where Satan really operates. In the following verse, the Apostle Paul confirms that the battlefield today is not in the realm of flesh and blood, but the realm of spiritual wickedness.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Satan’s strategy of spiritual wickedness concerns propagating forgeries and counterfeits of what God is doing, but subtly corrupted. The Apostle Paul describes how Satan will go so far as transforming himself and making his efforts appear as “an angel of light.” His deceived and deceiving workers will appear as being of Christ and ministers of Christ.

II Corinthians 11:13-15 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

The nation Israel was similarly warned that false teachers will cloak themselves as being part of the flock.

Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Satan’s efforts at forgery will be extremely subtle. His ultimate goal is to corrupt your mind, not your flesh. He wants to corrupt what you believe, rob you of the simplicity that we have in Christ through grace, and disrupt and inhibit your walk and growth in Christ.

II Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

It is important to recognize the lengths that Satan’s subtlety will go as an “angel of light.” Satan’s corrupted message will acknowledge Jesus, use scripture, and appear as sincere and genuine.

II Corinthians 11:4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

The above verse similarly parallels the Apostle Paul’s correction of the Galatians.

Galatians 1:6-7 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

Satan’s greatest victory as an “angel of light” is getting someone to believe a corrupted and perverted gospel of grace, and then getting this person to become his tool by propagating this corrupted and perverted gospel on their own.

Being Beguiled

One result of being falsely persuaded is that the person will be left in a state of being beguiled, which means to be in a state of deception as in a trap, to be distracted, or to be charmed as in a trance. According to Strong’s, the Greek word literally means to be seduced wholly.

Colossians 2:4 And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.

II Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

The Apostle Paul states that Eve was beguiled by Satan subtly. How was Satan subtle in his deception of her? The account in the garden is instrumental in understanding Satan's principles of operation as an "angel of light" (II Corinthians 11:14). It demonstrates how Satan uses and misuses the word of God as the basis for his subtle attack of deception.

One method that Satan uses is questioning the word of God, and he does this from a positive approach. He wants to raise doubt about it, thereby questioning it. Note his approach to Eve with “Yea, hath God said…”

Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

After questioning the word of God, Satan’s subtle attack may also include adding to the word of God. Note that Satan added the words “neither shall ye touch it,” which was not part of God’s command in Genesis 2:17.

Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Genesis 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

After questioning the word of God and adding to the word of God, Satan’s next method of subtle attack may include watering down the word of God. Note the following comparison.

Satan watered down the phrase “surely die” by changing it to “lest ye die.” The word lest is much less certain than the word surely. The definition of lest is the intention of preventing, or to avoid the risk of, or because of the possibility of. The definition of surely is certainly, unhesitatingly, and without fail. Lest is a possibility, while surely is a certainty.

Besides questioning, adding to, and watering down the word of God, Satan will also deny the word of God. Note the following comparison.

Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Genesis 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

The following passage from the Apostle Paul shows that the end result of being beguiled is being controlled human viewpoint, instead of divine viewpoint.

Colossians 2:18-19 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

While “humility of mind” (Acts 20:19) is an attribute of a spiritual saint, there can also be false humility in someone who is beguiled. This false humility is the humility of religion, and is not of God. The beguiled saint is not holding on to the Head, which is Christ. The person is left in a “charmed” state and puffed by their flesh, instead of their spirit. The person will have cut themselves off from being nourished by Christ, and will instead be fed by the religion of the flesh.

Being Bewitched

The Apostle Paul described the Galatians as being bewitched. To be bewitched means to have a spell cast over you, to be completely captivated or entranced, and placed under a power as if by magic.

Galatians 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?

Obviously, every Bible believer knows that scripture condemns the practice of witchcraft (i.e. Deuteronomy 18:10-12). One of the most fascinating accounts about witchcraft in the Bible is in I Samuel with Saul and the witch of Endor.

I Samuel 28:7-11 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee. And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die? And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing. Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.

What do witches do, and what was the witch of Endor doing in this account? One of the things that witches do is attempting to cast a spell and use magic to conjure up the dead, and in essence bring back to life (here on earth) someone that died. Saul and the witch of Endor sought to bring Samuel back. So how does this witch and witchcraft relate to Galatians and Paul telling the Galatians that they were bewitched?

Galatians 2:18-21 For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. For I through the law am [d]dead[/b] to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

What were the Galatians doing? The Galatians were putting themselves back under the law. The Galatians believed that keeping the law somehow kept them righteous and kept them justified (i.e. kept them saved). Through Paul, what do we know our position is with the law?

Romans 7:4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

Christ made us dead to the law, free from the law, and redeemed us from the curse of the law. Through Christ, we are justified by grace, positionally made righteous, and eternally secure. Instead of being under the law, we are now under grace. By calling the Galatians “bewitched,” Paul was telling the Galatians that they were trying to bring back to life something that God already said was dead. They were rebuilding what Christ already destroyed. Instead of living by grace, they were living by the law, which “frustrates” grace. The Galatians were not living as who they were in Christ. By putting themselves back under the law, the Galatians became “bewitched.” Like the Galatians, someone today is “bewitched” when they believe that keeping the law is what keeps them justified or keeps them righteous. This type of person is under a “spell.”

The following passage draws a comparison equating the sin of witchcraft with rebellion against God.

I Samuel 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

When Paul tells the Galatians that they were bewitched and not obeying the truth, in essence he is telling them that they are living in a state of rebellion against God, by putting themselves back under the law.

This account of the Galatians also demonstrates a practical example on the correct Berean (Acts 17:11) approach to studying the Bible, and the absolute need to “rightly divide the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15). What was the broad error of the Galatians? The broad error of the Galatians was not that they were being unscriptural. They were definitely being scriptural, because the law is obviously of scripture. Their error was that they were scriptural, but they were not being dispensational. The Galatians were putting themselves back under God’s program from a prior dispensation, and attempting to give life to something that God already said was dead. By being scriptural, but not dispensational, the Galatians became “bewitched.”

Committing Spiritual Adultery

From many examples of scripture, we know that adultery of the flesh comes through persuasion and seduction. The adulterous temptation may not only look good, but flattering words may be involved, and it may sound good.

Proverbs 6:24-25 To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman. Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

The careful student of scripture will know that countless times the nation Israel was accused of adultery, of being an adulteress, and of whoredom. This was from a spiritual perspective, as the were guilty of going after other gods or idols, etc.

I Chronicles 5:25 And they transgressed against the God of their fathers, and went a whoring after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them.

Ezekiel 23:37 That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them.

How does someone commit spiritual adultery today in the Dispensation of Grace?

Romans 7:1-4 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

Most are familiar with the terms polygamy or a polygamist, which means a husband that has more than one wife. The term polyandry describes the opposite - a wife that has more than one husband. As described in the above passage from Romans, if a woman married another man while not being “loosed from the law” with her first husband, she would be described as an adulteress or as polyandrous.

Through the use of analogy in Romans 7, the Apostle Paul uses the examples of marriage and adultery from a spiritual perspective, which becomes clear in verse 4. In that verse, Paul identifies that the woman in the analogy is really the members of the body of Christ. Paul also identifies that first husband and first marriage is to the law. The second marriage is under grace, as the body of Christ was declared to be dead to the law and free from the law.

What does the error of the Galatians teach us about adultery, from a spiritual perspective? The Galatians erred by being scriptural, but not dispensational in their approach to scripture. They were not “rightly dividing the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15), and this is Satan's most modern device of deception, compared to Eve. Instead of living under grace, the “bewitched” Galatians were putting themselves back under the law, which Christ had already made them dead to and free from. The Galatians erred by believing that keeping the law was what kept them justified, instead of grace. The Galatians left their current husband (the cross-work of Christ under grace) and went back to their previous dead husband (the law). By attempting to revive their dead husband (the law), the “bewitched” Galatians were (in essence) practicing witchcraft, and committed spiritual adultery.

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Gal 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

Have you committed spiritual adultery? Are you living as a Galatian, under the yoke of bondage and dominion of sin and the law, or are you standing in grace, as who you are in Christ?

Timothy your article has me wondering.

Would it not be possible for Satan to establish an entire counterfeit organizations … which an otherwise honorable individual can not see is counterfeit with the naked eye. I keep remembering that Satan wishes to usurp worship from God to himself.

Perhaps (for an example) establish whole denominations, which with the addition or deletion of certain important doctrines or principles … not seduce believers into a loss of salvation … but seduce those who have not yet believed into total system of false belief … perhaps using even those who are truly saved … but in “spiritual adultery” as you describe it … as sort of “Christian decoys”?

I keep remembering how close we are to the end game …

...certainly denominations which are loose! Interesting how "fundamentalist" is such a bad word. What are the fundamentals but believing Scripture, and believing the fundamentals.

Christian decoys....very interesting.

I've wondered this exact thing. I think it would be a most ingenious plan to start toying with believers and tainting the truth just enough to keep Christians from crying out, and keep the unbelievers from the truth. Making them FEEL as if they are spiritual and close to God and keeping them from the whole of the gospel....all while participating in a local evangelical church.

good stuff......

The peril assails the Church from the supernatural world, and comes from supernatural spirit-beings who are persons(Mark 1:25) with intelligent power of planning (Matt. 12:44-45), with strategy (Eph 6:11) the deception of those who "give heed" to them.

Those who are in peril are the spiritual children of God; who are not to be beguiled by the world or the flesh, but who are open to all they can learn of "spiritual" things, with sincere longing to be more "spiritual" and more advanced in the knowledge of God.

For deception by doctrinces would not concern the world so much as the Church. Evil spirits would not urge spiritual christians to open sin, such as murder, etc, but would plan deception in the form of "teaching" and "doctrines".

By the indirect means of deceived human teachers, supposed to be converying undiluted Divine "truth" and implicitly believed because of a godly life and character, believers saying, "He is a good man, and a holy man, and I believe him."

The life of the man is taken as a sufficient guarantee for his teaching, instead of judging the "teaching" by the scriptures, apart from his personal character. This has its foundation in the prevalent idea that everything that satan and his evil spirits do is manifestly evil, the truth not being realized that they work under cover of light (2 Corin 11:14), i.e, if they can get a "good man" to accept some idea from them, and pass it on as "truth", he is a better instrument for deceptive purposes than a bad man who would not be believed.

There is a difference between "false" teachers and deceived ones. There are many deceived ones amongst the most devoted teachers to-day, because they do not recognize that an army of teaching spirits have come forth to deceive the people of God, and that the special peril of the spiritual section of the church lies in the supernatural realm, from which the deceiving spirits with "teachings" are whispering their lies to all who are "spiritual", ie, open to spiritual things.

The "teaching spirits" with "doctrines" will make special effort to deceive those who have to transmit "doctrine", and seek to mingle their "teachings' with truth, so as to get them accepted.

Every believer must test all teachers today, for himself, by the Word of God, and their attitude to the atoning Cross of Christ, and other fundamental truths of the gospel, and not be misled into testing "teaching" by the character of the teacher. Good men can be deceived, and satan needs good men to float his lies under the guise of truth.

In 1 Timothy 4:1-3, the character of the spirits is described, and not the men they sometimes use in the work of deception, and may be understood from the Greek original.

The peril of the church at the close of the age, is therefore from supernatural beings who are "hypocrites", who pretend to be what they are not, who give "teachings" which appear to make for greater holiness, by producing ascetic severity to the "flesh", but who themselves are wicked and unclean, and deceive.

The prophecy of the HOly Spirit declares, that 1) Some shall fall away from the faith; 2) giving heed to deceiving spirits; the nature of their working being not known evil, but deception, which is a covered working. The essence of deception is that the operation is looked upon as sincere and pure. 3) in the nature of the doctrine of demons.4.)doctrines delivered with "hypocrisy", ie, spoken as if true.

The peril of the household of God is therefore not of a few, but all, for obviously none can "fall away from the faith" but those who are actually in the faith to begin with.

Ther peril is from an army of teaching spirits poured forth by satan upon all who would be open to "teachings" from the spiritual world, and through ignorance of such a danger, be unable to detect the wiles of the enemy.

Would it not be possible for Satan to establish an entire counterfeit organizations … which an otherwise honorable individual can not see is counterfeit with the naked eye. I keep remembering that Satan wishes to usurp worship from God to himself.

Actually, I would say it is far more than a possibility, and is an ongoing reality.

Ephesians 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive

There are countless winds of doctrine, and note that the deceptors lie in waiting, waiting to pounce on someone. Just as God today operates in "mystery" form, Satan counterfeits that, and also operates in mystery form. He is described as the "mystery of iniquity," because he is covert. An excellent scriptural study on this topic, by the way, is the book "Satan and His Plan of Evil" by Keith Blades.

II Thessalonians 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

Just look at the deception on the simplicity of salvation by grace through faith. The message is so clouded, where some are under the "spell" that they must work to get saved, work to prove they are saved, or work to stay saved. These "another gospels" are dangerous ground to be standing on.

What I think is really short-sighted today is the recognition of wickedness. This is also related to the past threads that we've had here on the "Satan Myth," and how many falsely understand how Satan operates and what his objectives are. Most today are solely focused on carnal wickedness that spiritual wickedness goes unnoticed. At least in my mind, it doesn't take rocket science to identify carnal wickedness. Plus, according to Romans 1, there will always be those that take "pleasure" in carnality. But due to the eccumenical movements, the existence of spiritual wickedness is swept under the rug. For example, there was another thread expressing displeasure that a book store was stocking Wiccan books. Obviously, this is wickedness. But at the same time, the so-called Christian sections of many stores are stocked with many books that are just as wicked and filled with spiritual wickedness.

I recently read that study on "Satan's Career" which is a part of Chafer's Systematic Theology (I notice you have it posted on your home page now) ... and I couldn't sleep at nights for all of the possibilities running through my head.

In that study Chafer proposes that Satan could change a minute doctrine and "ruin the whole lump" ... if that doctrine was "Salvation by Grace through Faith alone". There could be legions of followers doing all the right things ... saying all the right things ... stallwardly tithing, going to Church on Sunday and praying before every meal.

And yet, because they are attempting to "earn" their way ... and there is only one way and that is NOT by earning it ... they are not worshiping the one true God but his great enemy instead.

If that is the case ... then Satan is not the guy in a red suit with a forked tail and a pitch fork. Satan's ambassador could be the guy in a white suit who drives a white Cadillac who has local TV ministry raking in big dollars by reading Bible verses and selling video tapes ... but with some kind of a twisted message.

No wonder there will be those who say "Lord, Lord, ... "

Mat 7:22-23
(22) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
(23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Blitz: Along those exact lines, here is the interesting (and yet scary and humbling) thing to ponder:

By scriptural definition, the minute something is added to grace, it ceases to remain grace. If an unsaved person receives and believes a "gospel" that contains something else besides or in addition to grace, it is no longer the gospel of grace. It is the "another Jesus" and the "another gospel" of II Corinthians 11:4 and Galatians 1:6-7.

When looking at the example and the error of Galatians, the situation is the opposite, per se. They Galatians were already saved, but stopped walking in grace. They were still saved, but they stopped acting as who they were in Christ.

Unlike the Galatians, if someone never had or understood the gospel of grace to begin with, that is not a safe place to be (I'm choosing words carefully to abide by board rules)...

P.S. (Edit to Add): The Galatians were already saved, but they stopped walking in grace. And for that, the Apostle Paul, by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, totally rips them apart - and they are told that they are bewitched, and fallen from grace (practically speaking). If someone never was saved to begin with, and came under a Galatian gospel, that leaves some serious questions....

Now I know I won't sleep again tonight ... :doh

I wish we could do a study on Satan but the last time I tried it (on another board) it didn't work out as I had intended :B:

I do agree that it is improbable that Satan wastes his time trying to get individuals to sin when left altogether alone we do it so readily anyway without his assistance.

But the scheme of tricking otherwise good people into worshipping him ... Satan ... instead of God, has me in fits.

It is further compounded by the mistaken Christian mantra of "judge not" ... which in error discourages people from correcting ... or even warning one another.

Talk about a "narrow way" ...

If it weren't for the "as through fire" clause I would say that heaven would be fairly sparcely populated.

You lost me... what are you losing sleep over? The realisation of how Satan truly operates is an eye-popper, I must admit...

Talk about a "narrow way" ...

If it weren't for the "as through fire" clause I would say that heaven would be fairly sparcely populated.

Grace is extremely narrow.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Adding works to grace or as a condition of grace is a dangerous place to be.

Romans 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

You lost me... what are you losing sleep over? The realisation of how Satan truly operates is an eye-popper, I must admit ... Oh I will go and do something silly ... like try to fit the name of a Church group or even people I know into whether or not they are being so decieved that they may be worshiping idols instead of the the Living God.

I will think, "are these folks relying on the finished work of the Cross" ... and sometimes the plain answer just comes back "no".

I think (sadly) it is perhaps just simply easier to convince some "heathen" in deepest darkest Africa of the Truth of simple Salvation by way of Grace through Faith.

"Old Aunt Mable" may be pretty hard to convince that her favourite Big Hair TV preacher is a sham ... even if she buys his whole 50 edition VHS tape library she isn't going to learn any truth from him ...

While I share yuz guy's concern over the pure gospel of grace....it seems to me that those who are caught saying "Lord, Lord...", are told "I" never knew you....not the other way around. A subtle difference I know, but important I believe.

Great thread btw, Timothy.

Love the Peanuts avatar! Unless I am misunderstanding, I agree with what you are saying (i.e. Christ will say "I never knew you")...

Very Good thread & postings. I was reminded of a 'phase' in my Christian walk by which I was 'bewitched'. And the 'funny' part of the whole phase, was that while I was being 'persuaded', I was lavished with false hopes, dreams & gifts.

When I was finally ensnared & the enemy KNEW he had me, (or so he thought), these same bewitching friends, turned on me.

I really suffered emotionally & spiritually & had to do a lot of soul searching as well as repenting for allowing myself to be usurped.

God heard my sorrowful cries, had mercy on me & restored me back to Himself. I feel soo incredibly blessed now. I learned an extremely valuable lesson that will stay with me as a reminder of how the enemy will subltly bewitch you if you do not surrender your all in all to the Lord.

If it had not been for what I experienced, I would not understand Galations as well as I understand it now.

To God be the Glory forever & ever. AMEN.
