View Full Version : Why the screaming?

I was watching television when they had on a preacher who kept shouting/screaming his sermon at the top of his lungs. These are often the same type of preachers who run around drenched in sweat while they do so. My question is why in the world do they do this? As a Christian I find this type of "preaching" completely obnoxious. I can only imagine how ridiculous it appears to the unsaved. I certainly can't imagine Jesus or any of the apostles running around waving a hanky and screaming at the top of their lungs while they preached the gospel. What's up with this ranting? Why not act civilized?

I can only imagine how ridiculous it appears to the unsaved. You don't honestly think that they are serving the cause do you? I wonder who's team they could be on? Hmmm...

Some of them are actually really entertaining to watch if you mute the sound...try it.

Thats how my pastor is. Is something wrong with being excited for Jesus and preaching hard against sin?

I have some unsaved friends who have seen some of this stuff while channel surfing. You wouldn't believe some of their comments.
BTW, I don't believe I've ever heard a screaming performance from Adrian Rogers, Charles Stanley, David Jeremiah, Hal Lindsey, etc.
They preach hard and are certainly effective at what they do.

Being excited for Jesus doesn't mean you have to act like a raving lunatic. Who wants to sit and listen to someone scream at them for an hour?

Paul is the type we are to follow not "Barnum and Bailey" ... 1Co 9:18-23
(18) What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.
(19) For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
(20) And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
(21) To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
(22) To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
(23) And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.

I agree with everything you've said. Not only is it obnoxious but I usually haven't a clue what they're trying to say. Then they have that wierd organ noise in the background for extra dramatics. :rolleyes

I actually kind of like the screamers.
There is some history as to why pastors do this though. For starters, many years ago there was no fancy sound system to amplify their voices. I know that hasn't been a problem for some time, but for many older pastors...the preachers they watched growing up didn't have microphones; so they were screamers. And the other part is just the fact of keeping people engaged and/or trying to get their attention in the first place. Many revival preachers used to use these techniques in order to get people excited & jazzed...."Fire" they used to call it.
If you don't like it, that is fine...but don't you think that saying these men of GOD are uncivilized or raving lunatics....or worse, questioning whose team they are on?? That's a little over the top...just change the channel.

I usually do change the channel because they give me a headache. T.D. Jakes, Paula White and Rod Parsley are three I can't listen to. Especially Paula White and her screeching. :freaked

Thanks for the background LDinthewoods, I didn't know that before.
And Rod Parsley is the worst I've come across on this. I didn't know it was possible for someone to sweat as much as he does!

:noidea of all the portrayals of John the Baptist I have seen---I would never have sat and listened to him----he was one weird guy!
so,, I chalk it up to personality differences mostly.....I can't listen to screamers, either, so I can't tell you if they are right or wrong...... but, I know what you are saying, for sure......
I know a scripture that states: the spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet.......I think that means they carry their personality with their message.......:noidea

I personally don't like it, but I think it is more due to a style of preaching than anything else...
Something they learned in their Church upbringing... If their pastor preached like that, then they perhaps will preach the same way... Not all, but some adopt the style of preaching of their mentors...

Doesn't bother me.
Another thing to consider is, years ago, a lot of meetings took place at night. After people had worked in the field all day.
What happens when a tired farmer has had a bath, put on clean clothes adn get to set down for a few minutes ...? :yawn ZZZZZ (I just slept through a really good sermon yesterday!) Since pastors can't :brick to wake farmers up they have to settle for some dramatics.
That said, I imagine it's their sons and grandsons carrying on this time honored tradition :D: It beats the pastor haviing his head down reading index cards!

"Cry Loud and Spare Not Lift up your voice Like a trumpet"
"What you hear in the dark speak in the Light and what you hear in the Ear SHOUT from the rooftops"
God calls some to speak softly and some he calls to shout as mad men, even the apostle Paul said KNOWING the terror of the Lord to Persuade urgently, I can only handle it sometimes, but there is a time for everything!!!!
Do you honestly think you could discern the difference between Peter and Judas???? One had a repentant heart the other did not...........but both performed the ministry with the same signs and wonders and same anointing.....wow. Even the 11 who were so closely knitted with Jesus had no clue or discernment of Jesus..........that is why I am slow to accuse any who speak in the name of Jesus!!!!

I guess you have to understand the personality of the preacher, sometimes it is annoying and distracting, other times, yeah, I understand why they are excited. I guess an unbeliever would look at it kind of crazy, so make sure if they are with you, you put them on to Dr. Stanley, now, he's the man. " Now watch this..." :): as he says.

I know many a former non-believers that have been saved after listening to a fire & brimstone sermon being yelled at them all evening. I agree - everyone has their own personal prefrences...but we cannot assume one type of preaching is any more likely than another to scare away or draw in non-believers. Some non-believers are drawn in by the passion and the emotion evoked by such a sermon. And this type of preaching does not just go on in black churches...it is common in white churches also. It is not just some pastor putting on an act.

PS - I am not familiar with any of the TV preachers that have been mentioned so please understand where I'm coming from. I'm not talking about them.

Because the Bible says to.
Isa 58:1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.
1Co 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
1Co 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
Preaching! Not talking or teaching or sitting around in a circle holding hands singing kumbaya.
Ezekiel 33:2 Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman: 3 If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people; 4 Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul. 6 But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand. 7 So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. 8 When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. 9 Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.

Culture. That's what their church expects. That's not what I like, so that's why I don't go to those churches.

I am all for fire and brimstone. A lot of the preachers (not all) are just putting on a show. It's easy for a non-believer to see but for some reason a lot of Christians can't see it.
Oh and the organ music Rod Parsley has just drives me up the wall.

I don't think it was intended to be offensive in that area....it was meant to counter the passionate, emotionful, dramatic T.D. Jakes, who happens to not be white........there was no racial path taken, other than to contrast personalities....that is how I took it anyway.......
