Okay, other than skipping meals and praying during this time, what should I know? Are there different types of fasting? I think I've heard people allude to that. If so, what are they? What helps you when you fast? Any scriptures I should be aware of? I've never done this before and someone suggested I try it, and I'm thinking that it certainly wouldn't hurt to give it a go. Any advice would be welcome. I'm sure that I'm not the only one who's contemplated this and just found the whole prospect daunting.

I don't fast unless I sense the Holy Spirit is urging me to, and that is not very often however, I have known people who fast one meal every week. I would not recommend a long fast of water only unless you know God wants you to because fasting like that for long periods can be hard on the body.
Yes, there are different types of fasts, one being the Daniel fast which is only fruits and vegetables. You can get a book on fasting which would show many of them and what each one involves.
Fasting's effect is that it tunes out the flesh, by the denial of the vital substances the body craves. The men and women of old who did so were seeking something from God and were denying themselves the basic physical need in order to draw near to God in the Spirit.
Hope that helps.
