Faith to move mountains.
Was Jesus being literal in that if man has faith anything can be accomplished?
or
Was Jesus being figurative in telling his apostles that He (Jesus) uses faith to do this (move mountains), but that man does not have the power to do this themselves?

Man, in and of himself, does not. But when a person is given over to God; he's very close to the Lord in his walk, and his personal life, yes, he can probably do anything, but it will be in agreement with God. You can be assured that living that kind of life costs one a great deal of his own life. There's a high price of death-to-self to live that way.

I recently read several commentaries on Matt 17:20 and found that a "grain of mustard seed" and "faith to move mountains" were both phrases used proverbially by the Jews. A grain of mustard seed signified anything of a small quantity. A mountain signified anything difficult or seemingly impossible.
The purpose for the removal of a mountain is for the glory of God and good of man.
The faith refers to pure, absolute faith, in His power.

Yeah I don't think any human can move moutains, if so the world would be a very interesting place. I think that he was being symbolic there.
Also, if anyone can move mountains let me know, I would like some mountain top property..

The thing to remember is that faith is not a state of mind.
