Christians require proper spiritual nourishment in order to grow into spiritual maturity.
Is. 55:1
Everyone who thirst, come to the waters and you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good let your soul delight in it's abundance.
-------
A Christian has levels of nutritional needs and abilities:
1) Milk- Christian babes and new Christians (and Christian that have not sought after or had hunger for the Word).
2) Solid Food- Learning knowledge of the Word; learning not just the scripture, but, what Gods will is, and learning obedience.
3) Meat- Substantial diet of the Word; The ability to use the Word in daily life, because of practice and obedience.
4) Fruit- 'The Dessert'; "Gods promise of fulfillment" when you hunger for the meat, and become spiritually mature, through the regular nourishment of the Word and Gods plan.
Matt. 5: 6
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
--------
In order for nourishment to be 'pure', believers must drink pure milk. In other words, their milk must be free from impurities; malice, deceit, envy, hypocrisy and evil speaking.
Though we may be long time Christians and we have hungered and thirst for the Word an we have matured spiritually on the meat; there are always different areas of our lives that may require a milk diet, or temporarly going back to get renewed with milk.
We may be a strong, obedient Christians in most aspects of our lives, yet there may be one or more areas of weakness. A diet of meat may not provide the nourishment in that particular area. We will need to go back to the basic source of need-milk.
It can be easy, after spiritual maturity, to feast only only steak, forgetting that we still need milk and vegitables.(learning and suppying what our spiritual body needs on a regular basis), not just having knowledge and teaching others. We still have to balance that diet throughout our lives.
Heb. 5: 12
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.
For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use, have their sense exercised to disern both good and evil.
-------
In other words..those who are babes should not skip the early learning and the basic needs before jumping into things there are not ready for, example teaching, missionaries, etc. But also, some that have well learned the knowledge and teach, may need to go back and learn the basics, for example, they may be scripture smart, but they may have forgotten how to love like Christ or to forgive, etc.
We must keep a balanced spiritual diet, just as in a earthly diet, if we neglet one needed nutrition, it is going to effect how well the others work.
There are times in all our lives we will stop and have a little junk food (or bad spiritual food), but a regular diet on that will make us lacking in energy, lacking in spirit and strength.
How balanced is my diet? I now there are areas where I am weak, where I need more balance, I need a little more solid food (vegitables), in order the be a healthier Christian!
The reward is the fruit of the spirit, a healthy 'spiritual' temple pleasing to God.
Amen
