This is one look, this is from an Orthdox website:
from the Greek Orthodox website -
"Morally speaking, there is also the case of indirect suicide, in which people harm their health through abusive practices such as excessive smoking, excessive drinking of alcoholic beverages, and unnecessary risk-taking. The Orthodox Church teaches that we are obligated to care for our health, so these kinds of practices in fact are looked upon as immoral. However, they do not carry the same negative implications which the direct taking of one's own life has."

Now before people attack other parts of their doctrine, consider that there are other churches that also preach against smoking and drinking. Among them is the SDA, and here's a neat little stat, they have the lowest rates of
diseases brought on by these habits of any other Christian group.
You've been given the information.
Insistence on indulgence is slow suicide, as you've seen above.

I'm just the messenger on this one.
Since it's been shown to me that some here are prone to report people if they disagree with what they say, I'll just disseminate this information.

Please do point out where anyone has suggested on this board that excessive ANYTHING is moral?

On a lighter note; if Christians do smoke and drink, doesn't that infer that they'll just get to heaven sooner than others? :lol

The key word is "excessive." Eating to excess is also a form of slow suicide, as well as going out in the sun too often (i.e., it can cause skin cancer). Surfing in waters where there are sharks is also a form of self-abuse, as that poor guy from Australia found out.
Christians are permitted to smoke, drink, eat, surf, go out in the sun, et cetera, as long as it is not done to excess and within the bounds of right reason. It's called temperance. Any "church" which teaches otherwise is in error.

"All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable". "Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves". Nuff said. Since I am in a goofy mood this morning, let me just say that Christians who smoke and drink should never try putting their cigarette out in their drink. And Christians who smoke should NEVER light one up while in the outhouse like that guy in WV did! Not good! :lol
P.S. I never have smoked and I used to drink in my BC (Before Christ) days. But that was over 30 years ago. Just wanted you to know that I take Jesus seriously when He said not to be judgmental. :):

Gee, Christine closed the last thread like this one because of comments like cenimo's "Christians don't drink," so then he just goes and opens up a new one?? :confused
Yeah. That's smart.
There's seems to be a comprehension problem here. Most of us were attempting to discuss the significance, or lack thereof, of having an occasional drink...drinking in MODERATION. But for some reason there will always be those that REFUSE to address what is actually being said and will address only their own agenda, pretending that it was the topic all along. What good is that type of discussion? It's dishonest and goes nowhere fast.

OK Chris4Christ, we'll all PM you for approval before posting any thread.
As for adding gambling, you people have no concept of what you're speaking about....
I worked in Vegas for 16 years and someone close to me was one of Nevada's suicide statisitcs.
I tried.
Bye.

I am going to pull a trump card here and post on a closed thread. Just because I can. :):
First of all, the accusation that Christians who drink or smoke are not 'real' Christians is beyond inane.
Please note that I am not condoning anything that would put us in a less than Christ-like walk, but in the same token, I AM putting the kibosh on the attacks.
Yes, our bodies are the temple of God, but the day that someone can honestly say that their temple is infallible is the day that IMO, they have the right to challenge the spiritual walk of others in this manner.
We ALL have issues that make us less than perfect, and I would offer that gluttony is right up there with them (although we don't seem to hear about that one as much).
What about exercise? Time to get up from the computer and actually go outside and see the giant yellow heat producing orb in the sky?
Thin for your clothes, but your eating habits have your cholesterol sky high and at risk of a heart attack or stroke?
Remember, without love, we have nothing. It is not what the man puts into his mouth that defiles him - it is what is in his heart - so the insinuations of salvation questioning over this end and they end now.
Thank you.
