View Full Version : The cross was made from a dogwood tree

:rofl

There is a gospel song that says that...has anyone ever heard it? I don't know who sings it or wrote it...but my dh was listening to it today and asked me if this was in the bible. :rolleyes

It made me mad, 'cause he ought to know his bible better than that! Dogwood trees in Israel? :doh Does anyone actually know what wood the cross was made out of? From an olive tree maybe? Cedar?

But anyway, it took me awhile to convince him that Jesus did NOT say all that stuff in that song. That song claims that Jesus said something like, "From now on...the dogwood tree will be a sign to you of how I came to cleanse your sins. It will never again grow straight. The petals of the tree will show a cross to remind you of me. :rolleyes :rolleyes

Dh says, "Are you SURE He didn't say these things after his resurrection? I got out the Strong's Concordance...nowhere in the bible is there a mention of a dogwood tree. I told him I would read every gospel to convince him that Jesus didn't say that.

"Well, that ain't right then." Dh says. :B: And he turned the song off. "I always wondered if he said that." Um, but you never wondered enough TO LOOK???

Does anyone actually know what wood the cross was made out of? From an olive tree maybe? Cedar? Almost certainly Olive wood. It was relatively plentiful, and quite durable too.

I also heard that the dogwood tree used to be a very tall tree in Israel during Jesus' time on earth. I think Moody wrote about that saying the tree was cursed afterwards. How would he know? I think it was just a myth. Anyone know?

Now that's interesting Canaan...because the song (and Jesus in the song) says that the tree is cursed from now on also. :confused Where in the world did Moody get that stuff?

I guess I've got some more research to do. But it is definitely NOT in the bible.

im sure it's not hard to find out what material the romans used for their crosses at that time. even if its not in the bible its possible to find out.

I personally believe the Cross was made from the cedar tree.........simply because it was also used during the sacrifice of the red heifer along with hyssop, and scarlet.....simply because I truly believe that Christ and His sacrifice can be found through out the OT in types and shadows.

I can't find anything about Dwight L. Moody and the curse of the dogwood story. Does anyone know if he actually said something like that? :confused

Does anyone know where this "myth" originated?

Dh ought to know better. :yell

That's basically it, JnJ, thanks. I don't know about anyone else...but this garbage makes me mad. No one needs to have supposed quotes by Jesus (and God) out there about dogwood trees and curses. There is enough skepticism among unbelievers about the bible being the word of God. (I gotta get quoted by that dumb fundy quote site now. :B: )

My ma told me that old dogwood story about 40 years ago but prefaced her remarks with "people say." I guess it's one of the oldest urban legends on record.

I've always thought it was just a pretty story. And I think it should be accepted as such.

It can be a pretty story if it leaves out the "Jesus said" and "God said" references. It should be just that....a story.+ :nod I have no problem with it being "a story".
