View Full Version : The dangers of today's TV.

Hello folks, I was recently talking to a couple of friends of mine and they were raving about the next season of "The Sopranos". I mentioned how trashy and filthy this show is. Buy they ridicule me in saying that I am narrow minded, and that "MY" Christian views shouldn't be everyone elses standards. That everyone else thinks it's a great show and that it's won 30+ awards.
How can I show them Biblically that God does not like this sort of thing. That's isn't not "MY" standards, but God's?
Thank you.

Philippians 4:8 is a good verse to keep in mind when choosing whether or not to watch certain tv programs.
"Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is anything praiseworthy, think on these things."
If a show isn't at least a few of those, I don't watch it.

I assume these are professing Christians you are talking to, or you wouldn't be asking for Biblical evidence. If they are of the world, no scripture you present will mean anything to them...
you may as well show them a note from your mommy saying it's bad.
At any rate, if they're Christians, start with this:
Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Then move over to:
1 Thessalonians 5:22
Abstain from all appearance of evil.
Then ask them if they would watch a porn movie while sitting with their pastor.
Answer will be no.
Then ask them why they watch that stuff, which includes fornication, violence, murder, foul language, etc. while sitting NEXT TO THEIR LORD AND SAVIOR ON THE COUCH!

Or Little House on the Praerie. We've been buying that DVD set as it's released.
MAN it's wonderful to watch them reading scripture before bed, going to church every day, upholding good, moral values! Not a shred of fornication or even JOKING about it... :nod

A friend told me what she taught her teens regarding tv. She had them consider, " Would you be embarrassed if he came in the room right now and saw what you were watching? Would Jesus sit down and watch this show with you?"
If a person is saved, the Holy Spirit is in them. Whatever they see, the HS sees.
And its not just about tv.
Wherever they go, whatever they do or say or hear, the Holy Spirit is right there, experiencing with them.
I believe this is what the verse means about not grieving the Holy Spirit.

I don't understand the popularity of the Sopranos either. I've never come close to watching it.
I've actually known victims of the mob. :cry There is absolutely nothing at all good in it!
How to reach your friends? I'm with Angyl on this. I sort have my doubts about reaching them too.
There is an author about who left the MOB when he found God. I've heard part of his testimony once and I found it fascinating. Now to find out what his name was. I want to buy his book.
I'm pretty sure that he's going on tour with SonicFlood this year. Should be an amazing concert :thumb

I found it :thumb
Here's the e-mail I received from SonicFlood. It contains information about the man who left the MOB. Maybe it's coming to a place near you.
Dear Sonicflood friends,
With all that is going on in the world today, sometimes it's hard to keep
our eyes on Jesus, and his faithfulness. Fear has a way of creeping into
our lives, and causing us to forget that Jesus our Lord and Savior has
conquered all, even death, and has empowered us through faith to do the
same. We, the members of Sonicflood, want to be a part of helping others
remember that our Saviour is not only kind and gentle to us, He is
consistently waging war against the enemy on our behalf, and we can walk
in courage througout our lives. He has paved the way, and our futures lie in
His hands.
As part of this focus, we are launching the Fearless Planet tour in the
spring of 2004. The tour will feature another great band, as well as
well-known speaker/auther Michael Franzese. Michael has been known for
doing what few have done before, he left a life of organized crime and was
touched by the Lord, and now speaks to hundreds of thousands about God's
saving grace yearly. Moreover, he is living proof that courage comes from
the Lord. He lives everyday not knowing if the next time he turns the key
to start the engine on his car, if he will actually hear the motor start.
He believes that God has saved him, and walks out courage, living in
faith.
We're excited to have him out.
For tour dates, please continue to check back to this site. In addition,
if you are interested in booking the Fearless Planet tour, please contact our
booking agency (Christian Speakers and Artists), and speak with Darrell
Statema. The phone number is 800-220-8125, ext. 111. Please check out
the following link for more info.
See you on tour!

So far, no sign that this tour is coming to my town. Darn!

Good advice. Where ever we go, whatever we say, whatever we do imagine God next to you at all moments. Would he approve?

Psalm 101:2,3
I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way, O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.
I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.....

Sometimes praying that the Holy Spirit can convict them has more power than your words.....esp if you already once talked to them about it.....
I am amazed at how my kids have come to their own convictions, while I can no longer have authority over them, when I have kept up the prayer......(they are adults)

Thanks for posting that info, Grace. I'm going to the library tomorrow and plan on getting his book.
