Updated: 2:38 a.m. ET Feb. 10, 2004Mel Gibson has come under fire for being hard on Jews in his film “The Passion of the Christ” — but apparently, he feels that Protestants are also doomed to damnation. In fact, it looks like Gibson, a conservative Catholic, believes that his Episcopalian wife could be going to hell.
advertisement
Gibson was interviewed by the Herald Sun in Australia, and the reporter asked the star if Protestants are denied eternal salvation. “There is no salvation for those outside the Church,” Gibson replied. “I believe it.”
He elaborated: “Put it this way. My wife is a saint. She’s a much better person than I am. Honestly. She’s, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And it’s just not fair if she doesn’t make it, she’s better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it.”
Gibson also said in the interview that he was nearly suicidal before he made his controversial film. “I got to a very desperate place. Very desperate. Kind of jump-out-of-a-window kind of desperate,” he said in the interview. “And I didn’t want to hang around here, but I didn’t want to check out. The other side was kind of scary. And I don’t like heights, anyway. But when you get to that point where you don’t want to live, and you don’t want to die, it’s a desperate, horrible place to be. And I just hit my knees. And I had to use ‘The Passion of the Christ’ to heal my wounds.”
Gibson’s rep wasn’t available for comment.

IF this is true... what he said about people outside the Catholic Church... then even tho I've taken a lot of heat for my cautions about this film being heavily influenced by a Catholic point of view, I am still right.

Interesting to see if God can use a man deluded in this way to really get people saved.
Rather than condemn, I shall hope and pray, because if God can use a man like Jonah, Paul or Me, then he can use Mel as well.

I thought you would want to see this KK. I tend to agree with a lot of your posts, including taking some caution with this film.

I hope the movie reaches people too.
I hope unbelievers who are persuaded to seek God by this movie do not mistakenly turn to the Catholic false religion because thats what Mel is... and because the Catholic Church is promoting this movie even more than the true Church is.

Poor Mel Gibson. It must be awful for him to think that his wife is going to Hell. He seems like a tormented soul. Perhaps making the movie will help him by leading him to the truth.
I think the movie is a Catholic movie to a great degree. It seems to emphasize the whole Crucifixion event in the extreme. Hopefully, it will give adequate treatment to the resurrection. If not, I can see why the reports coming in say that there are so very many people crying at the end of the movie. I think giving adequate treatment to the resurrection will tend to diminish misrepresenting the Gospel message as anti-Semitic. Afterall, the real ending is a happy one and the Lord does not spout anti-Semitism either before or after the Resurrection. Indeed, when being crucifiied he asks for forgiveness of those responsible.

I don't know, his quote sounded pretty nonchalant.
"I don't think it's fair that my wife is going to hell, but if that's what the pope says, c'est la vie!"

Agreed 100%!!
We used to have a pastor that was a wonderful teacher, and I've known several people who have come to the Lord under his teaching. After sitting under his teaching for about 3 years the news is broken to the congregation that he had been having an adulterous affair and that he was stepping down. Not long after that, it was brought into light that he had been having NUMEROUS affairs while being our pastor and the same at the church he pastored before hand, bringing prostitutes into his office via a back door that was in an alleyway.
It was sad, he was a good teacher. God did use him in great ways. He was the one that baptized my husband and I. It was devestating when we found out what was going on.
Yes, God can take what was meant for evil and turn it into good for HIS NAMESAKE. Afterall, it isn't what we do, it's what Christ did. I pray this will happen with The Passion and that hearts will be softened upon seeing what Christ did for us.

Krispy, is this from Scripture? I would love to see it and read about this, it sounds realy interesting. I've never heard that before. My interest is piqued. :laugh If this is a personal story, do tell... please... :):

I wonder if we should not be asking questions like - is what I'm posting for the edification, exhortation, correction, of the Body of Christ, or will it just create discord among the brethren.
Not directed at anyone in particular, just thinking out loud.

Well, as long as he doesn't say or imply this in his film, then I don't see the problem...
...unless you've seen the film, Krispy, and know that it is giving the gospel according to the RCC and not the Gospel according to Jesus Christ. If that's the case, then, yes, your cautions would be right on.
For myself, I have yet to see it...but I personally know several very strong "Bible" Christians (evangelical, fundamentalist, NON-Catholic) that thought it was an excellent movie...and not necessarily a "Catholic" movie.
I'm willing to reserve my judgment until I've seen it. When I do, I'd have NO problem giving it a thumbs down if it seems at all to me like the gospel according to Rome.

That is not what he said. :tsk
He said, “Put it this way. My wife is a saint. She’s a much better person than I am. Honestly. She’s, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. You cannot tell from a paragraph of an article just how he feels about his wife, whom he has 7 or 8 children with. :tsk
People need to pray for Mel Gibson. There are so many catholics that believe this teaching, and can you imagine believing that your loved ones are going to hell? That is a horrible thing but people believe it because some pope in a castle told them to. It's terrible and people need to be in prayer that God will reveal the truth to those that have been deceived into believing this lie.

My thoughts about this from a similar thread in "End Times":
Honestly- this is most likely media manipulation against him for this movie...
The fatcs are that Mel is working very closely with protestants- and is obviously very much in love with his wife...
I believe God can use these two factors to really make him think about juwst accepting pronouncements from the chair, especially ones that can't be found anywhere in the Bible.
I also believe he shows the fruit of a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ... and like us- God will work on him in the areas he needs to :):

Well, I read this article just today on the web. Curious, but not disturbing.
Let's see... anyone here not believe in the rapture? I personally don't know. I have a hunch though that all those that are in Christ and do not believe in the rapture, and if the rapture is so, when it happens they will go! And probably without argument - you think!
The we have King David, and he knew better, who slept with a married woman and killed her husband. May be that it's just me, but God seems to have managed to use him nevertheless.
Then we have Peter who three times denied Christ at the time He needed Him most, not to mention sleeping when asked to watch and pray, and God managed to use him just the same.
Oh well, I could go on, but that ought to make the point.
If there is anyone, anywhere in this world that has all the theology down correctly, I'd like to meet them. I don't believe there is anyone like that alive.
We don't have long to wait until we can come back to this thread and others on this topic and then see what we all have to say after having seen the movie. Two weeks and counting!

I don't know about a Jawbone used of God (used of Samson yes)... here Balaam had a conversation with... well read it yourself:
Num 22:28-33
(28) And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?
(29) And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.
(30) And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.
(31) Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.
(32) And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:
(33) And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.

If those truly are quotes from Gibson, he seems to have his own version of Catholicism.
While "Outside the Church there is no salvation" is an accurate statement of Catholic Church teaching, there certainly are disclaimers relating to that statement that Gibson either is unaware of, or has chosen not to acknowledge.
From Catechism paragraphs 846-848...
To be "outside" the Church one item is key.
A person would have to know (i.e. truly believe) that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, and that same person would choose either not to join it, or to not to remain in it.
Plus another interesting teaching that Gibson either doesn't know or chooses not to acknowledge is that...
1) Anyone baptized in the name of the Trinity in conjuction with water is already a member. Granted if this person is of another Christian faith background, the "membership" is not of a perfect union, but the person is viewed as a fellow brother or sister in Christ.
2) Those persons who by no fault of their own do not know the Gospel or the Church are not automatically viewed as condemned. God, in His infinite mercy, will judge these people based on the dictates of their conscience and may too achieve salvation. And if they do, it will be through Christ's mercy and fair judgement.
So, despite the Gibson's accurate statement of, and correct belief in "...outside the church...." it is very hard for one to actually be "outside."

I would use caution in believing reports like these, and by that I don't mean to insult anyone's integrity. It is just that with all the flak that has come against Mel after the making of this film I wouldn't be shocked if this is less that true. Just a thought.

I'm not sure if this is true. Sounds fishy. Why would the man poison his image by saying his wife is going to hell because she's not Catholic right before his life's work is about to debut??
Seems like the media would use this as a distraction from the movie...we can't bash the movie anymore, no one's buying the anti-semitic thing, but let's call Mel's character into question!
At least I hope it isn't true.:(:

My statement was meant to be insightful, and a little bit humorous. Sometimes we all get caught up in being super-spiritual on this board that we forget to have a little fun.
It might surprise everyone (except PattyT) that I do have a sense of humor!

That is what i think also. He could have very much said these things, but he may not have. Alot of what is in the news is fabricated, and we need to remember that. But, the media continuously gets away with it.

Let's put a twist on this;):
If you are not apart of the Catholic church, then you are going to hell! THIS IS SO TRUE:thumb
What is the church, the church is the people, and all believers no matter what denomination they are apart of, they are all apart of the catholic church!:B:
Now if we think salvation only comes from being apart of the RCC go back and read your bible again.:D:
