There is this man at work whom I just found out is an athiest and he and I went at it yesterday . He said being a christian is an addiction just like a heroin addict is addicted to heroin. It fills a void that we feel in our lives and we feel if we dont have this belief that we feel like our life has no meaning ...well duh of course it has no meaning with out our Lord! Well he told me to read this book called "Virus Of The Mind" anyone ever read it?

Nope, but I do know what you mean.

I work with people who believe in God, but that is it and we are usually discussing, not really debating, truths. They come up with the most odd ideas, because they have heard of things Christian, and have no idea what they are talking about, then tell me they are still going to heaven.

Not without Faith in Jesus they aren't. There are people who go to church who do not get it, so how are atheists going to ? :(:

Atheists, though they deny it, think that Believers were born that way, that Believers didn't used to be lost like them, spouting the same godless stuff. Their lack of understanding is sad and tragic, many die lost for eternity.

Tell him to read the bible, on his own. Most atheists won't, then lie and tell you they did. Just to get you off their back. They are convicted by God's word and are afraid it is true.

They won't see that God put the answers in there. IF their lives were so wonderful, and they are so smart on their own, why are they messed up?

Then they lie that they have great lives.:rolleyes

Liz---------->sees another monthly fundie entry.

But no, I have not read it. It is written by men who have delusions of grandeur. I mostly laugh at the cluelessness of these writers. They say they have proof that Christians faith is not real and then present absolutely NO PROOF, as usual. then call it proof :pound

Prayer is the only thing to get them to soften their hard hearts. It is how i finally came to life. My son had his entire church praying for me.

OK, I am done with the rant you did not ask for. :D:

No i have not read that book, unless you go through it and are going to refute it point by point, ti will just be another useless self help book for atheists.

Liz--------->yep, see another fundie says quote. :lol

Wow- that's quite a stereotype this guy put out there.

Here's another stereotype that he may not enjoy quite as much:

"Being an atheist is just a cop-out for those who want to be consumed in there own self-centeredness- it eclipses that "inner warning voice" with- "don't worry about it- no big deal- when we die, we die- so let's all just party and do whatever we want."

This guy just sounds like a good manipulator (here's another stereotype he won't like.... most atheists are just real good at manipulating ;):)....

Now he'd argue that these stereotypes are not valid because they are made out of ignorance... well- I'd say exactly the same about his, and if he was honest- so would he ;):

Oh- and a good read for him to expel his ignorance about Christians is the New testament... it's quite an eye-opener ;):

Just call him on it- and if he's honest, he should see his own hypocracy.... and let him know- that if he won't hold preconceived misconceptions about you- then you won't about him- and then you can both start off with a fresh slate, and hopefully he'll be more open to setting aside the misconceptions, and learning the real truth about Christianity :):

My dh of 14 years says he is an atheist. Arguing has not brought him around yet, and it won't.

But prayer can, and my witness can and the Holy Spirit can.

Don't get drawn into arguments that will push him away from the Lord.

Why not make a deal with him that you'll read the book he suggests IF he will read the New Testament or at least the gospel according to John?

Mate, I have had so many people tell me that Christianity is like a drug, my reply is "yup, it's a drug, I am high on the Messiah Fire, and drunk on the New wine"

That normally shuts them up :D:

For an athesist he is actually near 100% correct. Except the Lord is surely a much better high than heroin.

I agree with the other posters. Don't enter into an argument with him.

Keep in mind that Memes (or viruses of the mind) are only theories.

Site with a brief review of "Virus of the Mind"

http://www.2think.org/votm.shtml

Here is another site that goes into a lot more detail regarding "memes" (which is the technical term for a "virus of the mind").

http://dosel.botany.ufl.edu/ecologyf02/downloads/meme.pdf

While this theory does not seem specifically designed to "combat" religion, it does seem to go after religion quite a bit.

As Liz stated early on, I wouldn't bother reading it unless you were willing to refute it point by point.
