This verse came up in apologetics and I found it intriguing when the concept is applied to christians
2 Peter 3
5For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
those who reject the creator are willingly ignorant....not just ignorant....but willingly ignorant....
Are there things that the christian can be willingly ignorant about?
Are there things that you personally have been willingly ignorant about?
God put it in my heart to study the concept of covenant....I chose to be willingly ignorant for awhile because I thought it would be dry...
what an idiot I was
:laugh .....when I finally got down to a serious study the Lord opened my eyes to so many new things....and helped me cement in my mind a lot of old ones.....
what about you all? personally or for christians in general

I am/was willingly ignorant of submissivness to my hubby. I didn't want to confront that part of my marriage and still have a hard time with it because of the implications it has to myself - pathetic isn't it.....but now I'm learning :thumb

I have been willingly ignorant about true repentance, and the need for consistently walking with God not just in words but in actions. Also I have been ignorant about knowing His word...slow to seek Him and be a student (humility = discomfort.)
The list is unfortunately endless for me.
Awesome topic, JH. I hope this thread gets going....

I think we might be the only ones truely ignorant....willfully that is..;):
or maybe it is just a really difficult thing to face...
I know what I was ignorant of...now I am trying to figure out what I am choosing to remain ignorant of...
I think it has to do with Jewish history.....it is something I know I need to get into...but it honestly seems overwhelming....that is why I am putting it off :sigh

Hi Joint Heir! Got a question for you, if I may...
How does that verse have anything to do with rejecting the creator? Are you drawing a conclusion that Peter is talking about salvation here?
The context of the verse deals with the promise of His return. People like to forget things, like the flooding, of the Earth, and the consuming fire to come, when He returns.
Peter explains that if "The Day of the Lord" began now, before God's chosen have come to repentence, they would be destoyed along with the unbelieving. God is not willing that any of them should perish. So, He patiently waits.

hey guy...
to be honest I hadn't thought about it that much....the context of the apologetics thread was athiests and those who reject the truth of God....I didn't pay too much attention to the thread....but God put the phrase willingly ignorant on my heart...
you are right that we are speaking about the 2nd coming....and those waiting for the arrival...
but verse 3 says that they will be following their own evil desires....I don't think these are the saved....but they are Jewish it seems....because they forgot ..instead of never knowing....
thanks for pointing that out....it is never good to be careless with the word:):

Maybe it’s just me...but after reading my own posts, I feel like I’m coming off rude. I don’t mean too. I enjoy reading everyone’s replies.

when I was reading Elisabeth Elliot, she told a story of a woman who's husband died and later the woman began to realize things she regretted about the relationship. The woman was praying one day and asked God, Why God, why didn't You show me these things while my husband was alive?
And God answered her: Because you were not ready to be shown.
Now I often pray, "Lord, make me ready to be shown", because altho there are times we are willingly ignoring something to be addressed, more often than not, we just aren't there, yet. We are not ready to receive the truth.
Jesus told his disciples, I have many things to tell you, but you can not bear them now.
We have blind spots, every one of us. Chances are, they aren't hidden from those near and dear to us, or our enemies, but we just won't willingly go there. So often, God has been able to break through on an issue of mine, that, I could not deny, once He revealed it to me, but I can tell others knew of it, after I have made the repentance and worked on adjustment......
"make me ready to be shown" is a great prayer.
but be ready to be surprised, when you discover what it is.....
I always am in disbelief, and find myself arguing everytime that it can't be so......but He makes it undeniable......but without condemnation.....that is important, if you feel condemnation, it is not from Him. :wave
