I'm looking for the title of a book I thought was mentioned here some time ago, maybe by Krispy, on church customs....pagan roots or influences. Church history, why the church is structured the way it is etc. Sound familiar?

Thanks in advance!

Did you do a search by chance? I'm sorry this doesn't sound too familiar to me.

Hope you find what you're looking for.

There is a book on the Pagan influences & history of the Roman Catholic Church. It is called the “Two Babylons” by Hislop. It is pretty good, even though its been attacked (especially by RCC).

milkncookiesmom queries about a book. The only one I recall is Christianity Through the Centuries by Earle Cairns, who was the chair of the history department at Wheaton College. It is a relatively short, one-volume text on how God the Holy Spirit has led His Church and how, even in divisions, He accomplishes His purposes for mankind through the Body. It has a "family tree" of various denominations, which ones came from other ones, etc.

Found it! I've spent the evening going through Krispy's postings from the past and found it in this post.

These are all good things, and I'm glad to hear about them. I think they are all headed in the right direction. A big question has to be asked tho... where did a lot of the traditions we have come from? The order of service for example. The "crumb & sip" Lord's Supper. Clergy. Alters. It's a topic that would surprise many. We're so far removed from the origination of these things that we assume they have always been a part of church since the apostles, but the fact is... they were not. I read a book recently called "Pagan Christianity" that was extremely well documented, and covered these issues. Do a google or yahoo search on that book title and check it out. I also highly recommend the FREE online workbook that I linked previously to anyone interested in what all I'm speaking about. It explains things a lot better than I can.

Pagan Christianity by Frank Viola

Then after I found it, I remembered where I had it written on a piece of paper and sure enough it was stuck way down in the front pocket of my notebook. :doh It is after midnight and now I can go to bed. :yawn :wave

Krispy, have you read the other two books in his series of three, Who is your covering? and Rethinking the Wineskin?

Are they as "well worth getting"?

I think they are... if you dont house church, you'll at least come away w/a good understanding of why some of us do.

Little thing I've noticed about Viola... at times he strikes me as someone who does have an axe to grind w/the institutional church. His books are great, but at times you need to look beyond his personal feelings.

I think this would be under the category of "understatement of the year."

IMHO he gives house-churchers a bad name. He seems to blame all the evils of the world on the "institutional" church. It's that type of thinking that puts division in the body. I personally believe there are pros and cons to both home fellowships and what is coined as the "institutional" (really don't like that terminology) church. I think they complement each other, rather than having this "us against them" mentality.

I am pleased to say however, that I have never picked up such an attitude from Krispy.

oh, and BTW Krispy...........GO Panthers- they're gonna pluck the Eagles on Sunday. :)
