My KJV says, "There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief."
My guess is that wicked people tend to hang out with other wicked people, and they will always get into mischief. Like begets like, so to speak. People who are just (justified with God; righteous) will avoid mischief and trouble. Nevertheless, bad things often come to "good" people, but it is their close relationship with God that will see them through it. The wicked have only their pitiful selves to deal with adversity.

I think one must take it in light of Romans 8:18 "For I consider the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." as well as Romans 5:3 "glory in tribulations..." If you consider that our present struggles do not harm our eternal life condition, and may actually help the matter, then one can appreciate the passage. In heaven we will likely not be regretting even the most challenging of experiences, praise God.
When reading out of the NKJV, which is my primary Bible, I read that the first line uses the noun "trouble" and the second line "evil" If trouble is synonymous with evil in the passage, then it is understandable that the righteous are not filled with evil. Romans 6:12, etc.
I will concede that this passage can lead to confusion and debate, it is not a clear passage to understand, but I am confident that we can make it clear enough to make it meaningful.

Check out Psalm 121 too. Verse 7 is similar to your question of the verse in Proverbs. Perhaps this is your spiritual life that is always protected instead of the physical body.
Since Solomon had tried "everything" in his quest for wisdom and he passed those guidelines on to us perhaps Proverbs 12:21 also tells us that although bad things can/do happen to those who love the Lord knowing God gives us hope to get through those bad times.

What we consider "bad" is not always bad. Its for our refinement and development. Trials and struggles for the christian are preparation for what is to come. Thus it is good and the verse is indeed true!!
