I saw him late last night on tv and I really enjoyed his sermon.

Can anyone tell me about him and what he believes in? I liked this 1 sermon I heard but I don't know much about him.:confused

He is described as "Word of Faith - Lite" ... less heresy/sounds great. But it is heresy none-the-less. He is not as "in your face" with it as someone like Kenneth Copeland is... but that is perhaps even more dangerous because it slips by a lot of people who do not understand or know sound Biblical doctrine. Under the ear tickling messages is the WOF heresy.

Browneyes, your best bet may be to do a search here for "Osteen" or "Lakewood"; it seems like there's a new thread or two about him every few months. (Not that there's anything wrong with that. :): )

P.S.: If you were looking for the official Lakewood site, it's at www.lakewood.cc (the use of ".cc" may have thrown you off).

Any evidence for the claim?

"Any evidence for the claim?"

Actually, Joel, this is one guy where I don't have anything concrete regarding his "word of faith lite" classification, but my gut is telling me something is off kilter with this preacher.

I have seen some of his sermons, and all of them had the "you can conquer the world" and "don't let the world get you down" type of flavor.

At the end of each sermon, he does say that he never likes to close without giving everyone an opportunity to make Jesus lord of their life, and he says say this prayer after me: blah, blah, blah - typical "sinners prayer" type wording. And then he says that if you said this prayer, and believed it (which is true - to an extent) then Jesus is the lord of your life, and you will soon experience the happiness and joy that it is to be a christian.

The above is obviously a paraphrase, but the gist of it is there.

My main problem with Osteen is that he always seems to be "selling" the upside of christianity, but never explaining or going into detail regarding either the difficulties or the "nuts and bolts" of christianity. This, in my opinion, is a grievous error that many pastors and teachers do.

That, and I agree with bondservant, the guy just smiles too darn much! :D:

Besides, JG, I think you have ulterior motives for playing devils advocate.

Joel and Joel :tin

Come to think of it - I've never seen the two of you in one place together.

Oops! Sorry for the derail.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled preacher analysis.

I agree, I some times like to watch on Sunday nights as I get ready to face Monday, but only to supplement what I hear in my church and read in the Bible.

Yes!!! I said this before on a previous thread about him and got :yell at for making the observation!

I don't know much about the guy, but watching what little I have, I totally agree with you Mark. There is just something there that I can't put my finger on, but I don't feel right inside my spirit about this guy (just feelings! - no hard facts).

I have posted this link before about 'ol Joel : http://cultlink.com/ar/osteen.htm

Don't know but he has always bothered me. I watch the money. How do they spend it? Do they preach the truth.

Look at his house and such....may explain that silly smile...$$Ka-Ching!

When biblical Christianity becomes popular and is a money maker...there is something wrong... Just MHO

I've seen him a couple of times. What I got out of it from what I have seen is that he is just a motivational speaker with plenty of stories and humor. Sometimes he would reference a verse, but did not explain the gospel so someone would see themselves in need of Christ. I did not hear anything about living for Christ in the couple that I remember, but just speeches to try to pump the people into a feel good mentality. He did have a time at the end for people to pray to get saved, but the message was one that I think that any motivator could give. (As I said, this is what I got out of the couple that I saw.)

I can't picture the New Testament church being anything like that.

I think he is WoF lite... its just what Ive picked up listening to him (the whole you can conquer the world thing).

Though personally I havent heard him teach any wacked out heresy, like Jesus paying for our sins in hell.

The one thing I really like about his show, is that at the start he tells everyone to pick up their Bibles, and then he tells them to repeat after him something like "This is Gods word, it tells me who I am, in Jesus name I'll never be the same"

He doesn't strike me as word of faith. He is a little light for my taste, but that's just a personal opinion, and I have never heard him ask for money like so many others do.
