THE DASH

The Dash

I read of a reverend who stood to speak

at the funeral of his friend.

He referred to the date

on her tombstone

from the beginning... to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the date with tears
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth, and
now only those who loved her know
what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;
the cars, the house, the cash.
What matters is how we live and loved
and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard,
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
You could be at "dash mid-range"

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real,
and always try to understand
the way other people feel, and
be less quick to anger,
show appreciation more
and love the people in our life like
we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
more often wear a smile
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So when your eulogy is being read
with your life's actions to rehash...
would you be pleased with the things they say
about how you spent YOUR DASH?

This morning in worship our scripture focus was Mark 9:38-50

Mark 9

Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us

38 "Teacher," said John, "we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us."
39 "Do not stop him," Jesus said. "No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, 40 for whoever is not against us is for us. 41 I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.

Causing to Sin

42 "And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck. 43If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48 where
" 'their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched.' 49 Everyone will be salted with fire.
50 "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other."

(NIV)

The analogy was made that if our [DASH i] lives were a movie what would we cut out or have cut out that would make it Glorifing to God.

( i ;): would be a good place to start )

There is alot of interesting history behind the making of the movie Snow White. From what I have read most of the success was that it was not so much about Snow White as it was about those "who are with her." Also, many months and hours of work were cut out of the movie because it did not enhance the over all big picture.

Interesting history

"Walt Disney's first full-length animated film, Snow White; it is considered a Disney masterpiece and has been placed in the National Film Registry (1989)" (http://www-personal.ksu.edu/~ajc5656/adapt.html)

Snow White is, (http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/greatmovies/snow_white.html) truth to tell, a bit of a bore, not a character who acts but one whose mere existence inspires others to act.The mistake of most of Disney's countless imitators over the years has been to confuse the titles of his movies with their subjects. ''Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'' is not so much about Snow White or Prince Charming as about the Seven Dwarfs and the evil Queen--and the countless creatures of the forest and the skies, from a bluebird that blushes to a turtle who takes forever to climb up a flight of stairs.
